he lost the 4x1 relay. not his fault. their lead off swam the slowest time out of all 32 swimmers.

in his other race, he lost to Van Hoogenband and Ian Thorpe. This was not a surprise since this is not one of his best events. he raced in it just to have a chance to compete against thorpe. He swam a personal best, which is all you can ask for.

8 golds was much to ambitous. It looks as if he we finish with 6 golds and 2 bronzes.

The thing that sucks about it is that people are disappointed that he's not going to win all 8.. when winning 6 golds is absolutely awesome in itself. Not winning 8 shouldn't bring down his achievements one bit. I can't imagine him next olympics.

He is swimming in events that he doesnt specialize in. He is going against record holders in some events. The fact that he even medaled in some is great.

I herd somewhere that he would have gotten a multi million dollar deal with speedo if he'd have won all 8 golds, but I don't think he gets a dime now.

EDIT: Most medal winners get paid. I believe your country pays you a bonus for winning. I know in Russian you get at least $50,000 for winning a gold medal.

You get paid for your medals. Not sure how much, but everyone that medals in the olympics gets some money.

Not from Speedo, though.

Well, I heard on NPR that supposely, the US Olympic committee gives out bonus for any medals won... 15k per gold was last I heard. It's almost a secret that not a lot of people knows about it.

But that money is so little compare to some other countries who may give a million per gold.

from the local newspaper...
-------------------------------------
In Athens, the U.S. Olympic Committee will give American athletes $25,000 for each gold medal, $15,000 for each silver and $10,000 for each bronze. In some sports, like swimming, wrestling and soccer, federation officials will throw in additional bonus money.

USA Swimming will give $50,000 for golds, $25,000 for silvers and $12,500 for bronzes. USA Wrestling will toss in $15,000 for gold, $8,000 for silver and $6,000 for bronze. The U.S. Soccer Federation offers a bonus pool to be split among the 18-player women's squad ranging from $100,000 for finishing fourth up to $720,000 for winning the gold.

Some U.S. swimmers have incentives with a lot more zeros attached. USA Swimming will award a $1 million bonus to any U.S. swimmer who sets a world record while winning a gold medal in the men's 1,500-meter freestyle or the women's 800-meter freestyle in Athens.

If I start training now, you think I could be ready for 2008? :D

I have to say that watching the 800m relay last night was the highlight of the Olymipics for me. I couldn't believe we held onto the lead.

I forgot how much, but I believe it was one of the soviet republics that was offering the equivalent of close to a million euros for a gold metal in swimming.

I'll be ready in 2008 for the 1st ever "get up from my lawn chair & run to the fridge for another beer" relay. That, & shotput. I've chucked so many things onto the roof, it's not even funny.

He never had a real chance at 8 gold. It was just a pipe dream for the media to pine over.

I was very convinced the australians would win the race. Hackett had a crappy lead off, I thought for sure he'd want to avenge Phelps drafting off him last year at world championships, but Hackett isnt swimming very well.

The media puts so much pressure on him. Winning 8 medals is quite a feat, who else at this olympics will win 8 medals? (5 individual, 3 relay) He would have had a better chance if he didn't swim the 200 free, but swam the 200 back instead. I think he got too big for his briches when he thought he could beat Thorpe and Pieter.

Still I can't believe how the American media portrays his medals as losses. At US olympic trials, when Crocker beat Phelps in the 100 fly, the media read Phelps loses again. Why not Crocker breaks world record?

Anyway, can you tell I love swimming? :D

*edit*

He actually did have a chance I think. He had to swim the 200 back instead of 200 fr though. They also shoud have swam gary hall on the relay.
