OLEDs better than LCDs and maybe CRTs

Have you heard of this new technology called OLED, Organic Light Emitting Diode. I'm very interested to see how it turns out.

Advantages over LCDs.

Increased brightness
Faster response time
Lighter weight
Greter durability
Broader operating temperature ranges

CRTs VS LCDs

CRTs

Cost less and produce a display capable of more colors than LCD displays.
CRTs also use emissive technology, meaing that they can provide their own light - this means you can view images from any angle.

LCDs

LCDs have gained popularity due to their smaller, lighter form factor and their lower power consumption.
Many users report lower eyestrain and fatigue due to the fact that LCD displays have no flicker.
LCDs emit fewer low-frequency electromagnetic emissions than CRTs.

Credit given to here.

Yea, I remember this "new" tech from 2001 which is ~ the age of your linked article.

Hi! Welcome to last year. :)

They're available on some digital cameras already and cellphones very soon. Probably a few years until we see monitor-sized ones. The problems right now are that they have to be produced in even cleaner conditions than LCDs (due to the organic components reacting with stuff in the air during production), and they degrade fairly rapidly (like losing 20% brightness over 2 years or so). In theory they're much much cheaper, though.

People are gonna refute that statement, and I would to a point, but I actually agree. Overall, the CRT performs the best, particularly because of its versatility (resolutions) and cost. But damn, sometimes I'd like some desk area back and have that cool flat panel sitting there. Eh, I game too much to like it I suppose.

Umm, I went back...I love my CRT

I used several BRANDS of LCD, and found too much motion blur, too bright, and people CANNOT see things from a side angle, (like if I am watching a DVD< or someone is watching me play a game) And the LCD's gave me a headache similar to the 3d glasses. I have sensitive eyes, and an LCD is too bright, and the blur effect strains my eyes MORE than the CRT. The CRT is crisper, more accurate (i do CAD drawings) and overall is a faster performer. LCD sucks, let's hope the OLED's are better..btw, isnt Sony coming out with an OLED monitor in Q1 2004?

hmmm one of my biggest complaints for LCDs is that they are not bright enough.. and the colors do not look as vibrant..

yeh my complaint about LCD is also they're not as colorful as CRT and are too damn expensive! if all you do is browse the web then LCD's are wonderful on the eyes. apart from that, i need my 17" CRT more than my 15" LCD...

this technology i'm very interested in. it sounds like a great alternative to LCD and CRT.

I just got a Samsung 192t recently and am loving it. Other then my laptops its the first LCD I have spent much time on. For the past few years I have used nothing but high end Mitsubishi and Sony 19" and 21" CRTs. I was hesitant to go LCD for quite awhile but now I don't think I can go back. I haven't played many games on it yet but so far with C&C Generals and RavenSheild I have seen no ghosting problems. I can't even notice it.

As for the brightness they have a great little button called "Magic Bright" that lets you switch between three preset (text, internet, entertainment) and one user defined setting just using one button on the front panel. Its great. I couldn't be happier with this thing. I don't think I'll ever go back to CRTs.

I'm not returning to CRTs anymore. I love my LCD and the only con is black, which seems a little too bright. It's great for playing too and may eyes are less tired now.
