No, just means they are way better then current LCD's and once they start to come out in mass some people will fell stupid for buying an LCD in the last 6-12 months

Yeah I'm one of those stupid people who has given up a substantial amount of eye strain and a pounding headache at the end of the day I used to get from staring at a CRT.😉

Not me... OLED looks awesome but when will it be affordable? I have the feeling I'll be using my LCD FP for a while yet before the OLED is within my budget.

6.2 million pixels is like over 3000x2000 resolution, that is awesome! Frankly I've looked at some of the large flat panel TV's in BB and CC and many of them look grainy. I'd hate to drop thousands of dollars for a grainy picture.

 
From what I read in the past OLED is supposed to be cheaper cost wise over current LCDS. So when they come out in mass they "should" be cheaper then current LCDS for any given size range.

Sounds nice, however:

1) It's not like this thing will be in mass-production anytime soon. 2007 in reality?
2) And where does it say this thing's going to be cheaper?

Edit: Maybe it will be in mass production afterall.
Moreover, the OLED uses Amorphous Silicon (a-Si) technology; thus can be mass-produced within Samsung's existing TFT-LCD lines. Samsung Electronics has now applied the a-Si technology to produce large-sized OLED panels within 4 th and 5 th generation production lines.

Guess it's next xmas or a birthday present 😉

I knew about OLEDs and SEDs when I got my LCD, but figured they were just too far away in the retail channel to wait. Don't get me wrong, I do want an OLED, but it's a matter of when. If this OLED monitor is within the CRT price range then I'll be the first one to get it and use it for a dual-LCD setup, or even better an SED and OLED setup (drool). Are dead pixels fixed with this technology?

I think SEDs will beat this technology since they're based on CRTs and that's what everybody seems to like better. Thanks for the news, though.
 
Production costs for these may be less than LCDs but that has nothing to do with the price it'll be on the market. They charge what people will pay. If it is NEW and BETTER than both CRT and LCD, they'll cost just as much as LCDs did (or more) when they first come out. Like, $800 for a 15" screen, etc.

And you know things are ALWAYS slow in development. I wouldn't expect to see these for awhile.

But, which technology will be dominant? Thin CRTs or OLEDs? Will CRT technology die or not?

Is anyone else realizing that LCD is going to end up being a VERY short-lived technology?
 
wow look at that contrast ratio...that aproaching crt levels

I can't wait till this tech matures and we have 80inch super high res screens to replace projectors. hell from what I've read on the technology thier nothing stopiing them making screens the size of movie theater screens
 
Many cellphone screens already use OLEDs. And I've been watching this technology for some time, with great intrest. I agree with the poster that said LCD will be a short-lived technology. It was a flash in the pan, but I don't think it has the technological staying power. I just wonder about refresh rates on these new screens; will they even be an issue? Anyway, once they come out en masse we shall see.

All well and good in theory, but we'll see how soon OLED's are avaible in the mass market for appealing prices. They can't just start turning these out on a dime, it will probably be a couple years before these are widely available on the market for attractive prices. I'll be happy to be wrong on this subject BTW 🙂 In the mean time my eyes will appreciate my LCD FP.

Anyway, yes, bring them on - I'm looking forward to them very much!

 
I am not getting my hopes up on OLED or LEP. There is a better technology going in to production for larger screens starting at 34". Check out www.ifire.com

OLED has lots of manufacturing problems and chemical life expectancy problems.

ifire is a canadian company. Also... Motorola is experimenting with carbon nanotube display technology... they probably call it NED.

That's my favorite part... but ever rarely does it come. I just can't seem to get to that point no matter how much I stay on the CRT. Thank god I'm enjoying excellent response times, killer contrast, and pure honest to goodness color.

If this is true then, manufacturing probably won't be as cheap as claimed and this will just be a preview to similar Carbon Nanotube Display Technology. Which will suck again. With another crappy technology on the market. Hopefully it won't turn out that way.
 
Hopefully something more perfected than LCD's will come out soon. Either iFire, OLED, or Carbon Nanotube Display. Something that has wicked image quality, produces true black colors (unlike LCDs because of the backlight), has no possibility of manufacturing defects like dead pixels or backlight leakage, etc.
 
important thing to me is $$$

just bought a 2005FPw, im happy with this thing

maybe in about 3-4 years, i'll upgrade 🙂

i dont ALWAYS have to buy the newest tech

Will OLED's have poor blacks, background leakage or dead pixels like LCD's? I heard somewhere it's almost the same technology as LCD's, so I'm expecting the answer to be yes.

OLEDs are nothing like the technology of LCDS.

yeah, they'll probably PAPER LAUNCH it in Q4 2005 and it wont hit widespread availability until Q2 2006 . . . THEN, the price will be too high, and it won't be affordable until 2007 or maybe even 2008 . . .

5000:1 contrast ratio looks nice. They say "fast response times." Wonder what fast is to them for this. >16ms?
