First mass-produced automobile - Oldsmobile Curved Dash (1901)

Buick, though large history, didnt have nearly as desirable history as Olds. you could have marketed the Lucerne as an Olds, and every other buick as an Olds but you killed them :(

Honestly, I think the name hurt them...OLDSmobile wasn't flying anymore for people looking for smaller sportier cars.

That said I loved my Oldsmobile 1993 cutlass supreme 3.4 L V6 200 HP :)

*sheds a tear for my long since passed '90 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais

American automakers need to cut the fat, but GM is digging their own grave.

One of my all time favorite cars was my 1973 Olds Delta 88 Royale Convertible loaded with a 455. That car was pure sex! I, for one, will miss Oldsmobile. :brokenheart:

oh trust me I know! I loved my olds, it was just because the name became "uncool" IMO for the younger crowd. That lost them the sales and the repeat buyers who would continue to buy their cars in the future.

My olds I mentioned earlier had dual exhaust/fake quad exhast and could put down quite a bit of torque outta its 3.4L V6 DOHC engine. Unfortunately...the brakes literally FELL off one icey night....and that was the beginning of the end of that car.

I almost bought an 89 Delta 88 once. That thing had TONS of power, but the steering was so loose on it I had a hard time keeping it on the road.

I'm not much of a fan of domestic cars but I don't get it either. GM has way too many brands but personally I think Buick and Pontiac (Ponticrap) should have gone first. Buick has a hopeless image of being associated with the 70+ age bracket. Pontiac aside from the Solstice are nothing more then cheap FF cars utilizing 5-10 year old tech; wasn't Pontiac supposed to be GM's performance brand?

GM did the right thing when they killed Oldsmobile. Now they just have to kill Pontiac, Saturn, Buick, and Hummer. Just Keep Cadilac, Chevy, and GMC for commercial trucks... and Saab as limited run European import cars with no stupid Trailblazer rebadges.

It wasn't the name that killed Oldsmobile, it was GM.

GM basically killed all the difference between their brands and just put different names on the same cars to "distinguish" between their other brands. Oldmobile had nothing left that was unique to the brand. Classic big business blunder which GM appears to want to rewrite as the largest blunder ever... now GM is literally fighting for it's life with this inbred corporate thinking. I hope they make it but it's looking pretty grim.

<----- 1988 Olds still running strong w/ 250K. In less affluent areas you still see lots of Delta 88s on the road because they just run and run.

GM killed the brand when they dumped the Cierra. It was the most profitable GM model at the time on a unit basis but even that didn't stop GM from being GM and screwing things up. Their "youth movement" alienated the folks who were buying Olds and failed to attract the target group. What the Deltas and Cierras had going for them was that they were comfortable, easy to get in and out of, and easy to drive. Perfect for an aging population.
