I'm trying to upgrade an old Sony laptop from 2x128MB to 2X256MB. I need to figure out if it takes low density or high density ram. I can't seem to figure it out, I've never really been knowlegable about laptops anyway.

The specs call for "32x64-100MHz PC100, 144p SODIMM, 3.3v, Sync" but I don't know if that is considered low or high. This meets that requirement set but I'm still not sure if it would work.

Any ideas?

What model is the Sony? The CPU speed? What chipset does it use?

The earlier/slower the machine, the more likely it needs low density. The Intel BX and 810 chipset requires low density, I'm pretty sure the 815 also. Here is some discussion.

From one eBay vendor (selling 512MB PC133 desktop DIMM):
Please be aware, It will work with Intel 845 chipset, VIA KT133 and SIS chipset. If you have Intel 810 or 815 it will NOT work.

The ones at geeks are high density. You can tell by the price🙂 Low density would be twice what they are asking. Also, the picture shows 4 chips on the side, you want 8.

If you find that high density will work for you, I have 2 X 256MB PC133 (high density, of course) that you can have for $50 shipped for the pair. Or $25 each. Cheaper than the geeks.
 
It's a VIAO PCG-FXA36. It has a 1.0GHZ Athlon CPU, and I didn't get a chance to check the chipset. I'm installed a new hard drive later in the week, so I'll remember to check at that time. Thanks.
