Older HP Touchsmart keeps freezing

I have an HP Touchsmart IQ810 That I bought in 2009, and brought with me from the UK to the USA a few years ago. I upgraded Vista to Windows 7. IN the past few months it has started to randomly freeze, like everything freezes - cursor, screen, keys, even the sound if something is playing. The only remedy is to hold down the power key and turn it off.

I've taken the computer back to factory settings and reinstalled Win 7. I've updated the drivers to the best of my ability, and tried to keep programs on it to a minimum, but it still freezes. Some days it will do it once, other days it will do it over and over.

Any thoughts on where to start in finding the cause of such a freeze?

Thank you in advance!

AIO's are a tough one. They, like laptops, usually have proprietary mobos and power supplies. If something fails, it can be difficult to obtain new parts.

Thankfully, the RAM and HDD are fairly standard parts that can be replaced, if you can access them. You might start there.

It sounds like it's overheasting. Try running some thermal monitoring software & get back to us. I use HWMonitor. You may just be having a dust/ventilation problem.

Under what kind of uses does the computer freeze up? Does it happen only when on the internet or when using a certain program? Or does it happen under a variety of uses? Do you know what CPU/gpu you have?

As always mfenn gave good advice. First thing to do is check for overheating. AIO systems tend to run hot, especially older systems built from less efficient parts.

If not that, it could be HDD, psu, a driver problem, or the system could just be underpowered for modern software, especially the increasing demands of internet sites.

Power supply, not overheating.

I've replaced the PS in multiple HP AIO's. Cheap off EBay and a relatively easy swap out.
