Older Drivers Still a Road Hazard

still, they never stopped being hazards, but all of our pussy politicians want thier votes, so they will never put a bill through like that.

The whole driving and license system in the US needs an overhaul. Make people treat it as privilege, like it truly is. Stricter guidelines to get a license, to retain one, heavier penalties for traffic infractions. These are things we need to implement along with countless other measures.

I'll never forget some old person's justification for voting for Bush because "Bin Laden is afraid of (him)".

So pretty much... old people DO vote, probably more so %wise than the 18-21 crowd.

"Imagine if you had to go take a test that would determine whether or not you could still drive!" says Gary Passmore, a lobbyist with the Congress of California Seniors."

Imagine if you had to go take a test to initially aquire your license!
Ohes noes!

I call for mandatory re-tests every ten years off driving - regardless of what age you started to drive or any other circumstances.

I've know several OAP's driving when they can't even read the road signs standing right next to them, reaction times are gonig to be slower, bad driving habbits become 'normal driving practices'

I'm not discriminating against old people, just pointing out the general facts of body decay

While I agree that some older persons can create a hazard, there are other drivers out there causing problems as well. How many people are killed by drunks or persons on drugs? Don't tell me they get what they deserve either, can you say Chappaquiddick? What about the person that runs a red light and causes an accident because they are so busy talking on a cell phone? How about the inexperienced driver that forgets about the Stop in "Turn on red, after Stop and the way is clear." If you prevent the elderly from driving, how are they going to get around? Public transportation in rural areas is non-existent, and nobody seems to want to take these people to the doctor or the store.

Driving stereotypes are usually pretty accurate. If someone's driving like a moron, I can bet they're usually old or asian. It seems over 90% of the time I'm right. It's sad, but true. Stereotypes are there for a reason. What's worse, an old asian women. I usually pass them or drive a lane over. They're bound to do something stupid.

Btw, fvck political correctness.

Ok I agree on Farmercal on a couple of points.

However the point I'd like to make is that of: People drive vehicles every day where they do not have full control (I was a passenger when my house mate was going hyperglasiemic (SP?) I have to steer the car into a parking lot and handbrake stop the car). Should he drive??

The whole mobile phone debate would probably continue into another infamous trolling event.

With madatory re-tests every x years, then the examiner can see whether or not that person has full control of the vehicle and is no danger to other road users.

This week alone I've had to take avoiding action 3 three times:

1. A very small lady not able to see over the wheel (dangerous as limited field of view)
2. Car pulled out in front of me as they didn't check their blind spot.
3. Van driving reversing around a corner too fast to see or react to any traffic.

None of these drivers were over 50 years of age - but if they had to re-take the test then they could be re-eductated on the correct driving ettiquete.

Just a simple theory test, reaction test, eye sight test and simple car maintainance (tyre pressures, etc)

And if someone treats their car like an extension of the penis and reflects in in their driving, its typically a 16-21 year old. Also a fairly true stereotype.

Every 5 years you should have to retake your driving test for your license. Problem solved.

I don't agree with the re-testing every X years. It's not like it's simple for everybody to coordinate the proper time off from busy schedules for something like that. I do agree that the elderly need to be re-tested since obviously there are physical and mental changes as people age.

do you go in to get a new drivers license every x years? I would think so. With that in mind I'm sure you can coordinate some extra time for a road test if you are an elderly

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles on Wednesday, 87-year-old Geroge Weller said he was too ill to be arraigned on vehicular manslaughter charges in the deaths of the 10 people he ran down in a Santa Monica farmers market in July 2003.

they had a good southpark episode on that 😀

I love that excuse "coordinate the time off busy schedules".

Well then how about those people who can't coordinate their cars away from the pavement

Do you make sure your vehicle is road worthy every trip - probably no!!
Do you take an eye test every year - probably no.

Sorry for flaming, hijacking, but I'm using an analogy like having a license for a gun "I havn't got time to make sure the safety catch is working OK and to take proper training"

Vehicles are just, if not more dangerous, that that of guns

also I'd like to know how the elderly are so busy that they couldn't manage going in for a road test.

oh I know. PUT DOWN THE TOKENS AND STEP AWAY FROM THE SLOT MACHINE.

I'm sure for something as important as driving someone could make some time off. They do for damned near everything else in thier life. I honestly thing that speed limits in the US could safely be raised 25% on almost all roads if people's attitudes towards driving were different. Too many people treat driving as a chore, or something that just happens. Personally, piloting my two ton chunk of metal and plastic at a 100 feet per second is something that I find is worth paying attention for. I don't know about most people, but I think my $20k investment is worth protecting. The $0.25 can of soda can stay in the cup holder until I get a good time to do something with it, the can isn't going anywhere that I'm not.

You might be a bit slow on the "pics or ban" thing, but I like your political incorrectness.

You did leave out "Teenager" from that of morons behind the wheel though. Boith genders are guilty, just in different ways. Boys drive their Daddy's Corolla like its a stolen Ferrari, and girls like to drift across all available lanes without signaling and rearend people while putting their makeup on. 😛

If you can't take one day off your schedule in a year, let alone 5 years, in the interest of keeping incompetent drivers off the road, then you should never have been let on the road in the first place.

Well, I don't check every trip. I wash my car about once every two weeks, and during that I do check certain things. I change my oil 5 times per year when more things get checked. My eyesight is good because I can still do my job, it's very eyesight oriented. My guns safetys do get checked before I use them, but when they're stored the safety is irrelevant because the ammo isn't with the guns. And I have taken classes on how to use my guns.

...maybe I'm just an exception.

Yes, another stereotype. There's also the mexican guys with the beat-up early 90s civics, with the huge exhaust and the blaring stereo.

I was at Costco the other day, and there were a few mexicans in the parking lot with, guess what, a beat-up civic. They had broken out the rear windshield to mount huge speakers above the back seats. Foreigners should be deported for stupidity.

There was also the mexican dude with the late 80s civic (SURPRISE!), covered in rust, with a different color hood and door than the rest of the body, rolling along with BRAND NEW spinning rims. He was sitting there with one arm across the wheel bobbing his head to some mexican crap like he owned the world. Again, I'm all for deportation for stupidity.

out of curiosity - do car owners within the US have to send their vehicles away for road worthyness test?

why can't we do the same with the owners??

No, but every state has different rules. In Maryland, a car needs to be inspected when the title changes (it's sold) and an emissions test needs to be done every three years.

Some states require safety inspections, some don't. California doesn't require safety inspections, but does emmissions. There are laws regarding safety items, and cops can write you tickets for them. Usually if you get one though, the question is "What were you REALLY doing?"
