I have an old p3 800 that's been sitting around for a couple months after I built a new system in May. I had to gank the geforce2 out of my p3 and put it in my new box until (finally) I got a Geforce 6800.
Today I decide I'll set up the old box as an mp3 and MAME box in my living room, on a wireless network with my new gaming box.
I popped the video card back in, and I removed the ISA 56k modem since I have no use for it anymore.
I plugged everything in and started it up.
Nothing appeared on the monitor, the indicator light remained orange (i.e. "no input") The CD drives sounded like they were spinning up over and over even though there were no discs in them. The HDD would spin up and then make a loud clicking noise, then spin up, click, spin up...over and over again. The num/caps/scroll lights on the keyboard would blink in tandem with the CD drives spinning up. I could open the tray to the DVD rom but whenever the box would start everything spinning up again, the tray would close.
I had a spare PSU lying around so I swapped it out and It didn't solve anything. I also put the ram in a different slot and tried it. Nada. I checked all the IDE and power connections and found that the IDE cable going into my HD was partially dislodged. "Problem solved" I thought. Well...I thought wrong. It still won't post. I even unplugged the HD and it still failed to return any kind of video signal.
So...I'm thinking this is a fried motherboard...but I have done absolutely nothing to this computer besides pull (and replace) the video card, and it was working fine the last time I used it.
Anyone have any insight? This is an MSI BE6 rev2 mobo, and it has LED diagnostic warning lights, but I long since lost the manual that explains the light error codes. Anyway, the lights flash various patterns as the box spins up the drives over and over, so I don't know how the diagnostic lights are gonna help me anyway.
