Old Skool Question. PII 350->PIII 500: Heat issues?

I have a very old-tech question.

I?m planning to replace a PII 350 on a PC with a PIII 500.
There is a heatsink already on the PII 350 processor, and for various reasons, it would be very advantageous if I can keep the same heatsink.

My question is that the PII 350 seems to consume 21 watts, and the PIII 500 eats 28 watts. Is the disparity in heat output so much so that the same heatsink could not be used?


 
Shouldn't be a problem. I went from a PII 400 to a PIII 550 with no noticable increase in temps with only a front case fan. You have to start worring about heat when you get into the Athlons and High PIII's.

My board has a P11 400 and its in a BX440SE which only covers 3.3v m/b supply.
Are you sure your m/b can go to a lower core voltage for the proposed P111 chip?
This has left me with the 370/Slot 1 converter route to get past the P11 500/550?
and that with a bios flash upgrade to achieve it.

If you want to be sure just buy a couple of Delta 38cfm fans and replace the lame OEM fans on the HS. I did this to my brother's Slot A Athlon and he overclocked it 750@1100MHz with ease. Air flow is the most important issue there.

^ Do this only if you can stand your computer sounding like a jet engine about to take off. Delta fans run at 7000 rpm and have a very distinctive, high-pitched (annoying) whirring sound. Otherwise, your old HSF should be fine!
