[Old School] G0 Q6600 on a P5N-E SLI

So I picked up the combo in the thread title for real cheap to add to my Folding@Home cluster, but I can't get the stupid thing to overclock at all. The BIOS that came with the board stalls flat at 1200FSB, and no other BIOS I've tried can even boot successfully at 1200FSB. I've tried jumping to 1333, 1334, 1450, 1600MHz (with CPU multiplier down to test) to try to skip any FSB holes the board might have, but it either doesn't finish POSTing or doesn't even show anything on the screen at all.

RAM is locked at 800MHz, I've tried bumping the Northbridge voltage up to 1.4V, LDT at 4x, PCI-E at 101MHz. No dice.

Anyone with experience overclocking this legacy POS able to give any advice? It really chaps my arse that I can't even get the board to POST at its RATED SPEED (ASUS says on their website the board supports 1333FSB CPUs.)

You can't overclock the Q6600 on that board. It's one of the 1st generation 680i boards and they had issues with running Higher than 1200mhz FSB speeds with the quad cores. It was identified as a problem with the GTL Ref voltage with them. It is not addressable with a bios or any other work around. Your only solutions are to either get another board or get a QX6700 since it has an unlocked multiplier.

NV-chipset S775 boards really sucked for overclocking. There may not be anything you can do.

(I've got a nice DFI X48 board in my FS thread, if you might be interested.)

Well doesn't that just suck the almighty whatever. No way around with a voltmod or anything?

Unfortunately there is no way around it as I said. I was in the same position as you back in 06 when I had an original EVGA 680i board and it wouldn't overclock the FSB past 1200Mhz with a quad core either. However EVGA released an updated revision to the 680i that had a fix for the GTL Ref voltage to allow overclocking with the quad cores. And they offered it as a free RMA to anyone that wanted it that had an original board. The new revision was able to actually take the FSB to over 1800Mhz with a quad. I know none of this helps you however.

That's a shame. Thanks for the advice, though. I'll have to see if I can trade it to someone for an Intel board, I hate to see a G0 Q6600 running at stock.

I had the exact same setup that you're trying to get working. After pulling half my hair out trying to OC and failing, I went searching on the web, and some kind soul had put up an extended discussion of working with the P5N and quads. I'll look to see if I can find it in a second.

The gist of it is that there's a particular BIOS (maybe a couple of them) for the P5N that allows you some room for overclocking quads. I ran my G0 Q6600 at 3.0 for six months (I acquired it in the winter, so I didn't care about the heat!), and also pushed it up to 3.6 just for kicks. It did run at 3.6 in my P5N, but the temps were nasty.

OK, I found the thread: www.overclock.net/t/300149/3ghz-q6600-oc-on-p5n-e-sli/50

The user diddler1979 is the one who fooled around with this board endlessly, so read his posts and, with any luck, you'll find some joy. Good luck!
