I picked up an old DLP projector for the kids to watch roku on and wonder - since it's low res (SVGA (800 x 600) ) would just hooking up a vga-> hdmi work or would it fritz out because of a resolution mismatch? I have a plan b involving reusing a laptop via vga (or getting a roku with rca jackS), just want to plan ahead.

This thread says yes. How are you handling the audio?

I'm typing this on a laptop that is outputting HDMI to a converter to VGA. I don't need audio (which is just as well as the cat ate the audio cable). The HDMI => VGA adapter including USB and audio cables cost me US$15.

Awesome, thank you! For audio I was thinking of just bluetooth speakers. If all else fails I'll get a roku with composite and rca jacks audio.

Just updating my thread for anyone who googles - my projector worked completely fine with an NVIDIA shield hooked up to it (the projector stated a max res of 1080i but detected 1080p just fine). Over all a 100" screen for 60 bucks, pleased!
