Old-school AMD OC'ing: How to unlock a Duron 1.3?

I have one of these lying around, and I'd like to be able to unlock it so I could overclock it freely...or better yet, underclock it. A mobo I'd like to try to run this thing on can't run processors above 1.3GHz, and I'd like to see if I could run this thing slower on it. Anyway, in trying the regular straight-up pencil trick, it didn't unlock the processor (for some reason). So, what am I doing wrong? Two things to help with:

1. Can I actually underclock this Duron to get it running in my older mobo?
2. Do Morgan core Durons like mine unlock differently? How can I unlock it?

Any and all help is much appreciated. Thanks!

you should just be able to connect all 5 L1 bridges and it owuld be unlocked (morgans=5bit chips i blieve)

(waht mobo?)

The mobo's an Abit KT7A 1.1. The version 1.3's supposed to be able to run those, and AXPs...but not my old 1.1. And like I said, unlocking the L1's w/a pencil doesn't seem to work. I heard those Durons are like, multiplier-locked or something. Is that true? Is there any way to beat that? If I could get a lower multiplier than 13, I could probably run it in the mobo...

how have you tried to change mults?

yah the durons are mult locked, thats where the pencil trick comes in

you need to connect all 5 bridges vertically

like
|||||
make sure they are not connected in any other way

maybe flash bios to newest one first, then try it
and if you need to change mult via switches/jumpers, do so before booting up

erm.....1.3 is about as good as it gets for a Duron.

Did they even release a Duron faster than 1.3?

I can get 1.33 ghz outta my Morgan cored Duron.....but you're not going to get too much more than that. I don't think it's worth the trouble.

Railer: Yeah, I know...it's more important that I can get lower multipliers to "underclock" this thing rather than overclocking. 1.3's as high as the Duron's supposed to go though...

Champion: I've tried in the BIOS of another mobo that can run Morgan core Durons to change the multiplier after the pencil trick-nothing doing. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

The 1.3ghz Morgan unlike lower speed morgans has the last L10 bridge connected which locks the multpliers below 13. So you have to either cut the L10 bridge that's closed or do a pin mod which I've read is the same pin mod used on the 2100+ but I can't verify that so cutting the L10 is the surest bet. Then you do the pencil trick on the L1's and I recommend a mechanical pencil or at the very least a good HB #2 because some pencil leads have too much clay in them to conduct well. Of course you can use conductive ink like in the rear window defogger kit for a permanant solution.

The pencil trick is unreliable ,thats probably what you are running up against. [edit]just read Dapinushers post about the x13+ multiplier range lock ,so nm;)

I've had 3 Morgan Durons to play with ,1 1.1GHz & 2 1.2GHz ,both unlocked easy using silver conductive paint ,& 2of them I had running on my Abit KT7a v1.3
(note XPs' can be run on v1.1 mbrds but there is an occasionally cold boot issue ,as in needing to hit reset to get it going .Note also the Morgan Duron has the same core design as the XP it just has less L2 cache & is an Alu core not Copper)

Btw why do you want to underclock it? ,that won't effect how well your mbrd supports that cpu.

Cut the L10, huh? So, I cut the closed L10, and leave the open one open, right? Then, regular closing of the L1's, and I should be golden, right? Cool.

Assimilator, why did I want to underclock it? I thought that if I did so, I could get the processor to run on my board. I figured that since that KT7A 1.1's not supposed to support processors over 1.2 GHz, if I could run it at around 1.2 GHz, I could get it running on that board. You can't do that though, right? Heh...my n00bness is showing

Thanks for all of the help; time to get to work. :)

My bad! I thought you wanted to drop the multiplier and up the FSB so you could run synchronous with the ram and improve bandwidth (that's what I'd do anyways ;) ) Hey with the latest bios on the KT7A also the same bios for KT7 you get an option for 1300 and higher, check out this thread.

No worries;)
From what I've read that cpu will work fine in your mbrd its just that you may have to hit reset on a cold boot.

Let us know how you get on:)

So what happened? What did you do? How's it running and at what speed?

BTW, I have a tie from the Christopher Reeve collection and it's very
