Old RTS with multiplayer?

My colleagues and I have been playing a lot of Empire Earth LAN games lately, but we're looking for something different now. Any suggestions? It'll have to be something that runs on craptacular intel IGPs, since that's what all our laptops use.

edit: guess I should clarify, we play cooperatively against the AI (this is just the occasional game between meetings, nothing serious). I was thinking about Mech Commander 2, but I feel like that only had competitive multiplayer (it's been a few years since I last played, so I can't remember all that well). I'm also thinking about trying Battle Realms (I remember playing that online years ago).

I have played a lot of co-op EE with friends as well, I really enjoy the challenge of it and the long games, even though the ai cheats horribly rather than actually being intelligent.

I found age of empires 3 and all the addons to be a pretty nice game to play thats similar to EE although I still prefer EE. You could also try age of mythology. Empire Earth 2 is also fairly good for big coop games but having played 1 and 2 a lot I still prefer the first game.

When I had my internship, we played a lot of Battle of Wesnoth, its turned based so it makes it convenient to alt-tab 😀

As for rts, I'd suggest age of empires 2, starcraft, warcraft 3

So, this is a free, open-source RTS based on an old console game from the late Nineties? Is it any good?

Holy...

I do have very good memories of that one, I remember renting it for two days on the original PlayStation, and then I ended up extending the rent period for a week, it was amazing, it was one of the first 3D RTS at least on consoles if I recall correctly, back then seeing something like that was rare (at least on consoles). It also had a story in the veins of Fallout, something related to a "new" rise of civilizations after a nuclear war, following by a planet-wide nuclear winter, with humans on the brink of extinction, forced to go underground and rebuild anew, but war rages on still, new techs arise, etc., I really liked it.

I always enjoyed Dune 2000 because of its simplicity. Of course the AI is crap and it is only fun when you play versus a real person.

The interface & AI could be better, but it's free, runs really well on old hardware, and offers lots of strategic options: radar, artillery units, counter batteries, command units. The units are customizable & the tech tree is huge.

I'm surprised only one person mentioned the original Starcraft!!!

I'm sure it runs on any IGP modern day system, hell, it runs on a Pentium II 😛
