old processor slowing down FPS a ton...?

hello, as you can see im new to these forums, so hello everybody.

well, i just got the new 3.3ns evga ti200, and got it installed yesterday. i turned off just about all of the "extra" visual settings, such as antialiasing, because i assumed my computer (p2 400mhz) couldnt handle too much. well, the first thing i did was fire up my addiction, the mod TFC for Half-Life. to my surprise, it ran maybe only slightly faster than the voodoo3 3000 i just had in my computer. the avg FPS was about 40-60 with the ti200. (by the way, this is with the ti200 running at 200/460; i only overclocked slightly because of lack of cooling in my case )

after that, i fired up 3dmark2001 and did the benchmark. i scored a 2940, which i thought to be slightly low. my friend, whom is quite computer literate told me that ti200's would score about 4000 on a good system.

does this sound right to anybody? am i expecting too much from my 400mhz? lol, any commments would help, thanks.

oh my lord.. that card shouldnt even be in the same computer.. so yes, its a huge factor.. .try and pick up a new Duron/Athlon combo!

I get 6800 in 3DMark2001 with a TI200@220/500 and a TBird@1520. So maybe you will get a higher score, too with a new proc

rofl, thanks for the quick reply. i was thinking about getting a new athlon xp, but if i did, i keep finding more and more stuff i gotta buy with it (ddr2100, new power supply, etc.), and i dont want to speand a lot of money :/ . oh well lol. so around 3000 on 3dmark2001 doesnt sound too slow? i really dont have much of a clue what it should or shouldnt be.

What kind of mobo do you have? You may be able to just get a new CPU and fix your problem.

I have a standard Intel Bx chipset mobo, so im not sure i have many options :x

You'd be surprised. Depending on the model, you could upgrade to a 1 GHz+ CPU. See if you can find out which board you have.

all i know is that its an INTEL made mobo. im not sure, but i think its called the intel "seattle" mobo

I think a Seattle is a SE440BX or SE440BX-2. The SE440BX-2 can use a new PIII or Celeron CPU, but the old one cant. Take a look HERE. There is another option from Powerleap you can also look at.

I wanted to buy me a new board but I reckon I will wait little more and buy me completely, a new computer in a few months.

Ummm...Most can struggle by @ 1 GHz. I think going from 400 MHz to 1000 - 1200 might be noticable.

exactly, if u get to 1ghz.. u'll be a new man... and your score with jump to 5000+ make that Ti-200 worth something!

im trying to scrap together some money to get up to 1gig. i should be able to find a cheap mobo for 60, a cheap athlon for about 60, then i just need to decide whether i wanna reuse my SD ram or go to DDR...i probly will need a new powersupply too, i think mine is less than 200watts right now. thanks for the help

Yeah, there's no way more then doubling his cpu power could help. He might as well just quit gaming until he can get exactly what you have.

1.33 @ 83fps. I'll give you this one, but I'd still say 64.7 is WAY better than he's doing on a 400, and completely playable.


If you can get a 1Ghz chip for your board, it will be a HUGE improvement. Don't listen to any other nonsense posted here. I had a 1Ghz Athlon till a few weeks ago, it was a lot bigger improvement when I got that after P3 600, than the 1.4 GHZ Athlon 1600+ XP I just got was.
