you are slightly off on that, they aren't paid enough to do math. if your job is soul crushing monotony why would you be motivated to solve a dickish customers math puzzles. that and they are multitasking already, most fast food places are about efficiency, and if they are juggling tasks, there is no brain power left to do math problems, it would break the flow. come to think of it those two things sorta contradict. i guess the more multitasking the more brain power..so its possible at a fast food or restaurant to use plenty of brain power juggling tasks. the real brainless jobs are stuff like cashier at walmart where you juggle nothing but are nothing but a drone.

I think I would just throw myself in the deep fryer if I had to work at McD's.

Funny story. There is this HUUUUGE guy that works at my local McD's. His name is Martin. He works with his mom there, they have been working together for years. One day my friend goes up to the late drive through window and orders a McMartin. The guy without missing a beat goes, "You can't afford a McMartin" in this slightly cocky/hilarious tone.

Computer usage in general is pretty cryptic and has its own set of revised verbiage.

Like pressing 'Start' to turn off the machine.
A 'window' is not a window that they are usually accustomed to.
Try explaining what an operating system is for in under 3 sentences without leaving them befuddled. (allocation of resources, file management, etc.)

A computer compared to other tools is a compilation of numerous technologies bundled into one. Not exactly in the same vein as explaining how to use a power drill.
To them a computer is just a glorified typewriter with solitaire and pr0n.

And they are old. Let them be. They have been using their brain a lot longer than we have and their brain cells have been deteriorating along with their internal organs. They need to worry about a lot more important things than downloading an mp3. Like keeping their blood pressure down or taking the right medication for arthritis.

I think they've earned the right to take it easy the rest of the way.

hehe

That's the thing though. Taking it easy and acting "meh" are different things.

Moogoo-The world basically is a computer now though, unfortunately.

My 72 year old Dad is really good with technology, even though most of his life has been spent on a tight budget, making most new technology out of his financial reach. Just the other day he properly hooked up a digital OTA box to his HD TV without any help (I had assumed that he wouldn't be able to do it and had offered my services).

I think his secret is that he has always been an avid reader and likes to figure things out for himself.

My mother-in-law just (and, I mean, like 30 minutes ago), tried to e-mail First Lady Michelle Obama at the following "e-mail" address that she found online:

I still cannot stop laughing.

Have worked in an internet cafe.

I promise the proportion of young people who can't figure out how to upload a picture is about the same.

I was thinking about how old people just can't seem to get the hang of technology for the most part. I was wondering why. Then I think I realized that old people just don't have any skills. They weren't trained like me or most younger people to go after skill sets. They had their factory jobs doing one thing for 45 years and that was it. Now people go through 7-8 jobs is it now?

Now if I don't learn a new program or learn this task or that task I'll get left in the dust.

It is almost sadness I feel too. Like a lot of them are simply not capable of learning anything new for that matter, like their brains can't handle it. It'll be a cold day before I let my little wiener kid outsmart me.

I didn't know how to change my new car's oil the other day, as it had a protective thing underneath that had to be removed. My dad helped me and now I know how to do it in the future. Why can't he upload pictures to the computer yet after many explanations?

Is it apathy or is it something natural that just happens? I just don't want to end up not being able to pick up new skills or abilities.

you get to a point where you just don't give a shit.

some of these people lived through the worst in history....you REALLY think that they give a rats ass if they can navigate the interweb?

Somehow I doubt that is high on their priority list, and don't be surprised if it goes down a couple of notches on yours too.

I think it is more that smart people are smart and dumb people are dumb.

Dumb old people can't figure out technology.

Many of my professors, who are very smart people and are in their 60s/70s, are perfectly fluent with technology.

They weren't trained like me or most older people to go after skill sets. They had their computer jobs doing one thing for 5 years and that was it. Back then people stayed with the same company and helped adapt it to a changing market place.

Now if I don't learn a new acronym or learn this FaceBook or that 4chan I'll get left in the dust.

It is almost sadness I feel too. Like a lot of them are simply not capable of learning anything new for that matter, like their brains can't handle it. It'll be a cold day before I let my little wiener kid outsmart me.

I didn't know how to change my new phones ring tone the other day, as it had a proprietary format that had to be removed. My kid helped me and now I know how to do it in the future. Why can't he change the oil on his car yet after many explanations?

Is it apathy or is it something natural that just happens? I just don't want to end up not being able to pick up new skills or abilities.

Fixed that for ya.

Your friend sounds like a big asshole.

sounds like he comes from the middle of fucking nowhere if rolling up to the McD's late night, where you know the names and personal life history of the employees, is the thing to do. esp if one is going to entertain themselves by ridiculing the employees.

I wonder if there are "no cruising" signs posted on any of the streets in this town.
