Old people should be retested every year if they want to drive

This happened a couple days ago at my nephew's school.

He is 7 years old and is traumatized over this. One kid lost a leg.

Its always an old person that loses control of their vehicle like this.

yes, i even wrote a paper about this in college in my junior english class. i worked at a grocery store as a bagger who would also take groceries out to cars. we had ALOT of elderly customers shop there. I saw plenty of accidents in the lot over the years, and they were all due to elderly people. one of the baggers was even hit by one of them.

if they can drive, i don't see why a test would be so hard for them.

Old people should be randomly checked like drunk drivers are. They should be pulled over if they're driving erratically and if they can't walk a straight line, or follow a simple light, then their license should be suspended.

Maybe have them get tested every two years after 55, then every year after 65, then every 6 months after 75 (exceptions being made for those who show themselves to be in extrodinary shape for their age). And require that they be able to see completely above the steering wheel, and not be allowed to drive a vehicle over 18 feet in length.

anyone 64 and older. Retested yearly. Once they fail they cannot drive anymore ever.

And they also should test anyone under 21. Many can pass the written test but behind the wheel, they seem to forget/ignore what they werre tested on.

Speeding/Courtesy/response to Emergency Vehicles/Red LIghts/Yield etc

I regard to the OP, "old people" are not the only problem. There are people of all ages who drive like shiat and should not have a license.

Teenagers can't drive often due to lack of experience. Much like anything else, there is a learning curve before one become's proficient. The elderly have trouble driving due to slower reflexes and poorer vision.

Teens are even more dangerous but that is usually due to ignorance or outright negligence.

The issue with the elderly is due to either incompetance and or recklessness due to physical disability.


The key here is that one of these issue can easily be rectifyied.

No, but they go street racing and take out innocent drivers. They plow into cars, lightposts, homes, you name it.

Let's face it, teens killing others on the road is so common, it rarely makes national news. But the elderly plowing into crowds is rare enough that when it happens, it makes national headlines.

The fact is, teens are responsible for more auto deaths than the elderly.

I think their driving record should be proof enough i.e. if they have a shiatload of speeding tickets and and accidents they *should* loose their license and have to go through defensive driving courses before being able to reapply for a new license.

You're right, usually it's more of the drunk driving, not paying attention, driving like racer wannabe's, failure to yield, running redlight, talking on cell phone wrecks, they're involved in.

They should retest every year before 21, and after 65.
