I got an old pentium 133 computer for free. I also happened to get a free 166 mhz pentium. I'm trying to replace the 133 with the 166 mhz chip, but I can't figure out how to take off the 133. I lift the bar thing, but nothing happens. There's this strip of metal that keeps the heatsink strapped to the motherboard. Anyone have any ideas? I'd still like the 133 to be OK in case the 166 doesn't work, so I can't just chop it off :)

you might not be able to take teh CPU off at all. Some companies such as Packerd Bell and HP used to embed the CPU onto the motherboard back in those days...

I have a similar computer sitting in the other room. A few years ago I removed the 133 and put a 200 overdrive processor in it. You have to take the metal clip off of the board and heatsink to lift off the processor. Also in order to get that 166 running at 166 your going to have to find the jumpers on the board to change the multiplier or voltage because right now the motherboard is set to run at 133.

Thanks for the help so far. How would you take off the metal bar? Just rip it off? Any help on which jumpers to change?

Hey CanOWorms, I'm using a Gateway 2000 (G6-200) right now, have no complaints. 200mhz Pentium Pro, 128mb RAM, 4.3GB HD. Sure it's small, but I tweaked the living daylights out of it and it does just fine for me. 'Course, the only real thing I do with it is surf......

Just thought it was kind of neat to run into another Gateway 2000.......-kd5-

Hehe.. Mine is a 133 mhz, 32 MB RAM, 4.something GB hard drive.

One of my roommates got 200 mhz, 166 mhz, and 133 mhz Gateway 2000 comps and a 486 (we think?) with an OverDrive attachment on it (haven't really tested this one because when we turn it on it starts smoking!) for free because a computer lab was throwing them away. They were all loaded with hard drives, sound cards, video cards, RAM, etc. He even got 2 17 inch flatscreen monitors and 1 15 inch monitor. Oh yeah, he even got some sort of huge netserver.. I think it's dual 200 mhzs or something!

I plan on making an all-acrylic case and sticking this 133 mhz in it :)

Are you talking about the M shaped clip? I changed out a Pentium 100 on one of those PB machines. You can push down on one side to get it under the plastic thing. Takes some pressure but it's possible.

Yeah, don't just rip the clip off, you could trash the board. You should be able to push down on one side of the clip and unhook it from the plastic tab on the board.

*Edit - IIRC it was a pain in the arse to get that clip off, so work at it and be careful.

Thanks I'll give it a try guys. I'm guessing that it's so old that it's crusty and stuck there :) I'll try working on it!
