Old Pentium mobo comes to life again.

First of all I'm not sure if it was just luck or not. But I had a old DFI P2XBL Rev. D Slot1 Pentium motherboard. Which had a bad bios chip. All it was saying was 'Checksum Error' no matter what I did.

But some how I was able to boot the system with a Win98 bootdisk. Then I was able to reflash the bios with the newest bios update I could fine. Now I the motherboard is working great now without any signs of problems.

I would just like to know what you guys think? Was it a bad bios chip or what.

Thats what I was thinking it was. I jumped up and down with joy when I got it working again. I know it's a old board and past it's prime. But the motherboard can handle upto a P3-450mhz the last time I looked.

But any how it would make a good little file server. If this town ever get's highspeed internet.

If it can take a P3/450, it can up to P3/550 - meaning pre-Coppermine. The Slot-T might work if you have late enough board revision. For instance, my Asus P2B-LS is only rev 1.03 and thus no dice.

hmmm. I will have to keep that in mind. 😀 I did bookmark the link to keep on hand.

[edit] I just looked on the DFI site for the max processor this board can handle. It says the max processor this board can handle is a PentiumIII 700E.

sounds like it's time to hit FS/FT

Sounds like a nice little server box to me.

If you don't have a proper firewall/router turn it into that. Otherwise make it a nice little file server, stick it into the back room/out of the way, stick a USP on it, for power surges and stuff to protect your files. Turn it into a media streamer, ftp internet server (be sure to use strong passwords), and SMB (windows file sharing) server.
