Old PC's - What to do with them?

I have a bunch of older Pentium PC's the office doesn't want anymore, but I'm just wondering if it's worth the time to invest in formatting all the HD's, and getting them crackin'?

I don't know how much is sitting in the basement, but lets say 5-7 P 100's. Some may need new heat sinks and such, but they might work for putting out a few work units a day.

Too bad I can't reuse the P/S for new ATX mobo's, I'd just buy a few new dual AMD's and call it good. :)

If they are full systems, cant you donate them to a school and use it as a write off?

I'm not sure the cost of running them warrants how little they would produce. Unless electricity isn't an issue. Then I would say go for it, just don't expect much.

Not really, because the systems are too slow to run the current applications they want to use.

That's exactly what I was thinking. The power (cost) to run them just isn't worth what they would produce. That's what is so frustrating because I can't re-use anything from them. Just the case would be nice, but not practical.

Take them to the FS/FT forum and see if you can sell them as perfect linux router boxes or whatever. Then buy something newer with the money you get. Even if you get 50 after shipping, that is enopugh to get a decent midrange system.

I bought a few p266 systems for $35 shipped so not sure just what you can get for 'em.

The 266's are crunching for me :) A 100 is a little slow for my tastes, and are probably not cost effective to use for Crunching.

What about parting them out in FS/FT? Probably get a few more bucks for them there.

Probably get a few bucks on the CPU's mabye about $10 for the HD's ( if 1 gig + ) 10 for the cd-roms ect.

Talk to Narzy. He runs R.O.C.K. (Recycled Old Computers for Kids).

He may be interested in taking them as a donation, and either using them or scavaging for parts to build other systems.

And there is some software out there that gives you an office suite of products that isn't the PIG like MS.

I haven't heard but Narzy was looking into the charity status so people could claim it as a donation.

This would be the way to go. Then configure them with Seti or something else, point them to TeAm AT, and let the recruitment of the younger generation begin!

I voted for "Crap". :D

Seriously, if you're the one paying the electric bill, I wouldn't bother with 'em. But as donations they're certainly worth that.. get some Linux on 'em and a basic word-processor program, and they'll certainly be of use to someone. :)

If you don't donate them to some school/youth/church group, just take them to the FS/FT forum. They make excellent routers and such. Some of us woul look on a P100 as an upgrade.
