I was not aware of any such thing. Are you saying there is an artificial cap? Never heard of that. plus i see benchmarks that get frame rates in the hundreds, so i'm not sure if there is a cap coded in.

not sure...

Just gonna use my results as a good excuse to expedite the cpu/board/ram upgrades!

i believe they go in the console to remove that. have you tried games like crysis to notice if there's a difference? Yes i googled it and UE3 games do have an FPS cap. so regardless of what vid card u're using, if u're getting over 30-40fps or whatever the cap is, u're not gonna notice a difference.

Do all of them do that? I thought maybe it was just the couple of P55's with USB3/SATA3 that are out now. Is it gonna be that way on all P55's with USB3/SATA3?

I'm not sure. People in the forums claim achieving the full SATA III limit with an SSD would be easy if and when OCZ includes the appropriate internal RAID controller on their Colossus product (for example).

Also by the look of this article http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3731, it appears densities will be doubling again Q4. That means the price could theorectically be halved without even taking improvements in mass production (volume) into account.

Even if the OP does consider running a multi-monitor setup, it should be towards the bottom of his priority list. He needs to determine the best upgrade path for the MB/CPU/RAM first, & this includes his OC targets.

Once he's fully determined this upgrade path, he should then consider the multi-monitor upgrade options. IMO, it doesn't make sense to reverse these priorities.

I took the plunge and ordered a i5-750, P55-GD65 mobo, and 4 gigs ram. should be here this evening

Can't wait to see what this baby can do

That's such a huge upgrade from what you had before. It should scream in all games.

Your CPU is a big time bottleneck. You would be getting 2x frames to 3x frames per second more if you had a CPU to match. Pick up a Phenom X4 . You will see major difference... gl

OC this i5 750, and re-run your Mass Effect benchmark that was giving 40fps on the Socket 939 Opty. It will be interesting to see the difference made by only the CPU when pushing your HD5870.

If you don't mind bargain hunting, shopping for a X58 might not be a bad idea. (We are still waiting on prices for the 32nm 12mb Gulftown based Xeon quad cores. These should be out in 6 weeks).

Hahah, bargain hunting, what? You know Gulftown is going to start at about $1000, and by the time they're affordable X58 is going to be old and crappy? Edit: oh you said quads, not hexa. Point still stands, just slightly less so.

Buy what's a good deal and gives you good performance, right now. Luckily it looks like the OP has done exactly that.

I don't know why anyone cares about SATA3. The real world difference between 300 and 600MB/s drive transfers has to be the least noticeable change imaginable.

I figured P55 would be good enough for my needs. Couldn't justify the $150 or so premium for X58.

Since the P55 chipset will not support SATA 3 and USB 3 anyways, i figured why wait. I wasn't interested in a molested 2nd PCIe x16 slot just to add USB 3 and SATA3 (maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like mobo makers are just stealing lanes from the 2nd slot in order to add a 3rd party chip for those features). If i want USB3 in the future I will add a card.

I will post some before and after benchmarks after I get her built. UPS man just dropped the gear off, and I am heading home from work in a few minutes.

I can't wait to read how you like it. I'm waiting for UPS to deliver the rest of my new setup and am chomping at the bit for it. i5-750 P55 2x4gb HD5850 OC version.

You know what, considering how well x2 939 cpus have held their value, I would think that upgrading your CPU/mb shouldn't cost you that much more extra. You'll get more money than you might think out of that 170.

+1. I sold a DFI Expert 939 board about a year ago and got about $85 out of it. I was surprised. There were at least 3-4 people that inquired about it on CL before I sold it.

well, i am still installing software etc etc. but i fired up Dragon Age for a few minutes just to get a taste. My frame rate was 40-60 with my 5870 and Opteron 170. Now it's hitting 170!!! money well spent

gonna go sleep, downloading all my Steam games overnight.

will post a 3dmark06 run tomorrow

HA see how CPU bound you were? It'll help in all games and even general computing.

That's AWESOME. I can't wait to load up dragon age. I stopped playing a few weeks ago when I started planning this build. I've been having to play it on some lower settings and with no gore.

The only snag I've come across so far is with my Dell Ultrasharp monitor. If i plug in it's built in USB hub to my new build, it takes forever to POST, and if I enter BIOS there is about a 1 second lag for each keystroke.

Once Windows boots, it seems fine.

Unplug the monitor's USB hub and it screams through POST. Weird, there are no devices even plugged into the monitor.

Just a minor annoyance.

Can't wait to get home and try other games, and 3dmark

Do you have the kb plugged into the hub? try plugging it directly into the computer.

Everybody keeps saying how the OP was CPU bound, that's not true. He was platform bound.

I put a 5750 in my 4800 X2 (939) rig and a 5750 in an AM3 Athlon II 620 rig. The 620 rig still blew the 4800 rig away when I clocked them both at 2.4GHz (using single threaded benchmarks).

Sell your 939 platform. CPU + mobo + RAM you can probably squeeze $200-250 out of that.

jpeake, just for what its worth.. I am still running my Opty 170, 4GB RAM, 4850/512 and have all my parts at home for my new system, waiting for me to put it together and install win7. I still do not have an upgraded video card but expect gains from replacing the CPU/mb/RAM even with my little 4850.

I got an i7 860
Gigabyte P55A-UD4P
4GB G.Skill NQ 1600 DDR3

I as well can't wait to see how it does!

you are gonna have big gains i bet, even with the 4850. I still love that card. hell, BB has them on clearance for like $90. get a second one for xfire!

well, at stock settings/speeds, i got about 18,000 3dmarks (3dmark06).

did a weak little OC to 3Ghz, and got 19,642.

sure beats the 8,000 I was getting with the 5870 and my Opty 170!

Gonna google for some OC settings with this board/CPU and see what i can do. Although it screams even stock, so I am not sure I need to OC. I will do it just to see what it can reach, but may just run it stock for daily usage.

that seems a little low since I get 16241 with my E8500 at 3.8 and gtx260.

EDIT: never mind, I think that does look about right so my bad.
