Old PC for DOS games

I'm thinking of making a PC for old DOS games like DOOM, Quake, and the like. What build should I make? Budget doesn't matter, this is something I'm just making a list of and putting aside for when I want to take on the challenge.

It's going to be more of what OS than what hardware. Budget always matters.

To be honest, I'm not sure what OS to use, like I said I want to play old DOS games because DOSbox is crappy, so i guess DOS then. Whichever version it is.

Well, you'll probably want something pretty old for driver support reasons.

I would probably look at early Pentium hardware and run Windows 95, which had (In my experience anyway) the best DOS compatibility layer of the 9x/Me Windows versions for gaming.

Sorry to hear DosBox doesn't work for you. What about emulating a DOS machine in VirtualBox or something?

For Doom and Quake you may as well run modern source ports, at least for Doom there are a few that try to work on modern OSes but give the same experience as the original (Chocolate Doom for example).

An old Pentium PC would be pretty cool to have just for old time fun. Windows 98 running on it.
