Old PATA HDD crashed. Need suggestions on recovery.

Hello,

In the other thread I asked about newer HDD options, so I thought I would srare the status of the current one here.

Recently my 6 year old Samsung PATA Spin Point 80GB HDD crashed. For sometime I had ignored the warnings given by SMART(BIOS).

On boot up, it shows BOOT DISK FAILURE. If I try to reinstall Windows by booting from CD drive, it takes a long time to read the hard disk. Then it shows an partitioned HDD. I created partitions and format it. After 2-3 tries, it was successfully formatted.

Then the Windows installation continues and the files are copied. However as per normal Windows installation process, a reboot is required. After reboot, I again get the message BOOT DISK FAILURE. Ideally it should continue installation even thought the Windows CD is in the drive.

Does anybody have a clue of what the error might be? All the connections have been checked and the whole installation attempt was repeated twice.

Is there any way to make the drive work? Or is it just a case of flogging a dead horse?

Regards,
S

If you are really set on reviving it if at all possible, I suggest try finding a diag/recovery tool by the manufacturer.

However, considering the price of drives, it might not be worth your trouble.
