Old "New" Intel Stock Cooler TIM Question.

I can get these both for the same price used. Its a spare parts build for my teenage nephew. He plays multiplayer stuff like Counterstrike GO, PUBG and soon Fallout 76. The i5 turbos up to 3.9 Ghz and the Xeon to 3.6 Ghz, but the Xeon has hyperthreading. Which should I go for? I don't play those sort of games so I'm not sure if the hyperthreading matters or not. Thanks.

I thought it was 4C/8T. Oops, I was wrong. I'm pretty much capped at $90 - $100, so I think a 4/4 Haswell is about the best I can do for that budget. The i5-4690 it is.

Get the i5. The Xeon makes no sense, unless your nephew has plans to run his own private server for whatever reasons. But since your nephew only wants to play games, the i5 makes much more sense.

Even then, I would avoid the 1225-V3 since that particular CPU doesn't have hyper-threading; which makes it absolutely pointless if you're going to be getting a Xeon CPU in the first place.

Thanks. Yeah, I see now the E3-1230 v3 is the lowest with 4/8. They're going for $130 on up used. The i5 is going to be paired with his old HD 7950 so it should do him fine. It'll be way better than that old Phenom II X4 980 rig he currently is suffering with.

Found an i5 4590 for $15 less than the i5 4690. I doubt the 200 Mhz would matter one way or the other so I bought it. Thanks again for correcting me on the Xeon. Kept me from wasting $20.

Well I have the i5-4590 now and am going to use a HSF from an i7-4790k. Its never been used and has been in the box for about three years. I touched the pre-installed TIM and its smooth and dry. I've never used a stock Intel HSF before. Is that normal? Will it liquify and spread when it gets warm? Or should I replace it?

Yes, thats normal, just use it, it will melt.

Yes, it's much easier for customers not to have to worry about applying TIM, and the TIM is fine for shipping and storage since it won't come off easily.

You aren't supposed to touch the TIM, btw.
