Old modem + old computer = problem

I am attempting to fix up an old Gateway G6-300 (PII 300, LX chipset) to give to my family, (put Windows ME on there) and everything is going well except for the modem detection. It is some garbage Global Village 56k telepath ISA internal modem, taken from another system. The computer does not detect it, but I was able locate the drivers and attempt a manual install. I have to select the COM port to install it to, and no matter what I select I am met with an error message. I have tried disabling and selecting different COM ports in the BIOS for quite a while with different results (port already open, could not open port, modem is not responding.) If anyone has any ideas on how to get this stupid thing working I am open to any suggestions. Thanks.

Just guessin here; does this old modem have jumpers on it to select which com port it will install to? It should if it isn't plug-n-pray
