omg the nostalgia. yeah, there's definitely a ton of good books being mentioned here.

I really loved catcher in the rye. The perspective and narrating style was something a lot of us could relate to during that time.

My Brother Jack (George Johnstone). Good social commentary of life in Australia from the 1930's to the 1960's
The Slave (Isaac Bashevis Singer). The life of a Jew and a Gentile in 17th century Poland. So far removed from my life.

Agree with PoPPeR, Lord of the Flies was such an eye opener.
