I'm thinking about picking up an ipod touch not so much for the mp3 and video part but the pda functions. I would get an iphone but I hate ATT.

So I'm stuck between getting old ipod touch and jailbreaking it so use the newer apps.

Or just picking up a newer one with the apps already there.

the older ones are 40 to 50 bucks cheaper, and if I'm really lazy pay the 20 bucks to "upgrade."

I'm leaning towards old + jailbreak but I want to read up more on jailbreaking the thing and be sure I don't accidently screw up. If anyone got a link with easy tutorial it woudl be great and make my decision easier.

I'm curious where you're seeing iPod Touches for $40-$50 cheaper because I'm looking at Amazon right now and they're going for $260/$360 from most of the major retailers. Would you be talking about getting one used, or does someone have a stock of the old models that don't come with the iPhone applications?

No matter which one you get though, I would jailbreak it either way. There are some nice 3rd-party apps out there for it, and SSHing in to your MP3 player just has this great geeky element to it. The jailbreaking process itself is fairly simple. The 1.1.3 jailbreak is still a little finicky right now because Apple finally implemented some application-level security on the OS (previously everything ran as root, now it doesn't) but I'd still recommend going for it.

the 50 bucks cheaper was last week. BHphoto video I guess jacked up prices to match everyone else. Wish I made up my mind sooner.

But yeah I'm looking at the older ones without the iphone applications.

Amazon still has them 260/360. BB, CC, Costco various others are about the same price.

But yeah since I posted I been reading its fairly easy and straight forward to jailbreak. So I'm gonna be picking up the old one after an hour or so at the apple store playing with a 1.1.3 one to make sure I like all all the apps and all.

If the prices are the same, why pick up an old one? You may as well grab a newer one.

i used to jailbreak my touch, but with the 1.1.3 update, i just bit the bullet and paid the 20 bucks. the way i see it, the only apps i used on the touch were the ones from the iphone anyway, and now i don't have to mess around with jailbreaking with every update or worry about compatibility with official programs when they come out. it saves time in that respect and becomes worth the money. i found the "3rd party" apps to be useless in general, and will bet that the official apps that come out will be better polished and actually functional.

QFT, I was the same, I did the jailbreaks for the iPhone apps. I bit the bullet and purchased the apps via iTunes and now I run a legit 1.1.3
