Old HP machine not booting

I have my GF's old computer here, main reason it was replaced was because it suddenly just wouldn't work (seriously, not more technical than that). One day it just crashed, or forze (wasn't there when it happened), and then would not boot.

I take a look at it, and as in the summar, it will only SOMETIMES get to post, and when it does, it sometimes doesn't get past it, freezing either right after it detects the mouse, or right after detecting the drives. When it does get past these points, it will only load the first part of an operating system. In its native Windows ME operating system, it will just freeze at the splash screen. After a couple times it would get through and get to the "You didn't shut me down properly" screen, so i can choose safe mode. No matter what I choose there, it just goest to a blank screen with a " _ " on it flashing, and stays there.

Similar with a gentoo live CD I put in there (can't find my knoppix, and only have DVDs, no CDs to burn a new one atm). When it gets through the POST, it will ask me if I want to check kernels or options. I just hit enter so it would boot up the bare bones version of the OS. It says "Loading gentoo.............." and "Loading gentoo.igx.............." (can't remember if it was igx or not, but something like that afterwards). But yeah, it does that, then refreshes the screen to completely blank, and will not move from it.

I find the sporadic getting through POST confusing, as well as the fact that it will load the first part of two VERY different operating systems, but not get any farther than the first step.

It's down to barebones now, just the mobo (has integrated video and whatnot, so can't do much about that), and a harddrive (obviously after my checking with gentoo). I even unplugged the floppy drive, just in case it might be sending bad data (as well as the modem it had in it for some reason). I've tried clearing the CMOS (taking out the battery and loading default settings) and while that helps in letting my get through post for the next few boots, that still fails, and it still won't get beyond the splash screen. There's only 1 stick of RAM in it, so can't check if 1 of the 2 it might've had was bad... and I don't think I have an extra stick of its type.

It's an HP Pavilion XT936. So yeah, any ideas as to how to fix this compy?

Get a Windows 98 boot diskette, fdisk then reformat the drive(s) and then get a newer O/S (I recommend Win2000) to install on it other than Windows ME - throw Windows ME in the trash can.

Check the capacitors on the motherboard to see if they are puffed up or leaking. If they are, the board is toast.

What redbeard1 said and also try hooking up a different power supply. Windows ME is obviously garbage too.

You could try booting with the machine stripped all but the CD (diskette too) and boot from an Ultimate boot CD (contains many utilities such as memtest). Run memtest first.

Or use a known good win98se boot diskette with the machine stripped of all add in cards and the hard disk and the CD. If this works run memtest from diskette.

Next add the hard drive and test file access.

Next add the CD. If it fails at this point (2 drives using 12V) I suspect the 12V PS or CD.

The reason to strip it is to try to counter a weak PS just in case. This should let you know what you have to work with , if anything.

Alright, well firstly, IF I can fix the thing, it probably going to get Linux on it (so this would be my first truly linux box, no dual boot). SO yeah, I shuddered when I saw ME as well.

I've checked and rechecked the capacitors, and I see nothing unusual about them, no leaking or anything.

I have found the website for the "Ultimate Boot CD" so I shall try that tonight, with the system stripped down like you talked about. We shall see if any of those might be the cause of it.

Thanks

Well, tried the CD, and the exact SAME thing happens. I can get it to boot, and I can do ONLY ONE instruction, then whatever the next screen is, it refuses to take commands. Same as with linux, and windows, well... i guess it defines its own commands or something.

Any other ideas? How in the world could it perform one user command, or just boot up PART of ANY operating system and then fail?
