Old Hardware

Is it worth even firing up some old P4's and Athlon FX for the WCG or Folding contest? There in the garage so I don't have to hear them.

Are we talking, 8-core Piledriver-based FX, or "original FX" (dual-cores)? Probably not worth it for the dual-cores, at least from a PPD/power perspective.

Dual core, was just thinking, if it would help out. They haven't been on in 2 years, but have about 5-8 systems I could add on.

Might not amount to much. The power consumption is bad for the planet. If you had solar and ran them off that, do it. Not to be a tree hugger but at this point the math doesn't add up for older power-sucking systems.

Sorry, but I'd say no to both projects as well, with one exception: Use as heaters. If you need heat, why not make it USEFUL heat? 🙂

Yeah, I probably will use them for heaters in the garage if it ever gets cold. Don't want my race tires to freeze and crack, LoL.

What do you mean if it ever gets cold? Got down to 80 a couple days this week already just north of ya! Had to wear my long johns. 😉

LOL, I am ready for nights in the 40's and days in the low 70's. I work on HVAC's, I hate summer, except for the money.

where I am (Pacific NW) its common to have a natural gas furnace and central air. Heat pumps don't work well here. (efficiently)
