Old geforce overclocking

Ok. Ive got an OLD OLD OLD geforce 256 32 mb card. It comes stock at 120 mhz clock and 160 clock memory.

I did the coolbits thing in my registry and started upping the memory frequency by 3 and doing a 3dmark01 benchmark test. If it didnt mess up during the benchmark, i pushed it Higher. I brought it up to 140/196 and it was still working fine. I clicked apply these setting at startup and when i restarted and ran the 3dmark01 demo, it kept glitching.

So, i went and changed my card back to 120/160 and it was still glitching so i restarted and now its fine. Why was it benchmarking fine before the restart and then started glitching after?

Edit: I just noticed that when i click demo, it recommends me to run it at the best color depth and a certain resolution. If i do that even at stock speeds it glitches. Running at 140/196 without the best color depth, i dont glitch. I think that was the problem
