Old first generation ipad question?

Can you play games like angry birds and grandma run?

Angry birds yes. Not sure what grandma run is. I can run most apps and non 3D type games just fine. Actually I never tried to run anything but casual type games.

I just "inherited" a 1st Gen 64GB iPad. Still figuring how to add/transfer a ebook/epub/pdf file without the use of iTunes. Too bad the iOS is not upgradeable, stuck to 5.1.1.

iTune is the gateway into any iOS mobile device! I doubt that you can import a file into an Apple mobile device without using iTunes to do so! Anyways, why would you not use iTunes? Does not make any sense! It integrated into the iOS of the mobile device!

Doubt you'll be able to install much on it. My mom has an ipad 2 and when I tried to install stuff it said she requires a newer version of iOS. The ipad 1 will be even worse.

Her iOS version must be quite old. What version is it? Remember, the iPad 2 actually supports the latest version of iOS, which is 8.1.

The only problem is it's a little laggy in 8.1. Ideal for the iPad 2 is iOS 7.1.2, and with that version you can install almost anything. Unfortunately, you can no longer update to 7.1.2. It's 8.1 or nothing.

Still, I'd much rather run a iPad 2 with iOS 8.1 than say iOS 5.1, partially because of app compatibility, and partially because of features.

Dropbox should work IIRC. From there you can download the file, and then open in another app. I think that will work with 5.1.1

I think it was on some version of 6 but I can't be sure. It may not have been a problem with every app, but the couple we tried to install gave us the same notice that we couldn't install the app without a system update. She had no interest in such a thing and I don't really blame her, so here we are.

Yeah, iOS 6 is becoming problematic. A lot of apps require at least iOS 7 now. There are even rare apps that require iOS 8, although usually it will let you download the iOS 7 version if you only have iOS 7 installed.

Long story short: iOS 6 is too old now, but she can update to iOS 8, with the caveat there will be some more OS lag.

I think on iPad 1 it's the only gateway. At least I've never been able to do it any other way.
I have a Fire HDX now, but I actually dislike it more than iPad 1. I'd love to smack around the guy that thought it was a good idea to put the power and volume buttons on the back of the unit on opposite sides of each other and make the inputs at an angle like that.
