I have an old dell p733 and recently got a new 160 gig hard drive. I know the other mobos don't recognize anything over 130soemthing so I have a pci ata133 card in. The computer doesn't recognize the os installed in the 160 gig drive. I've tried to change the settings in startup but see no where to select booting for a pci device? Can anyone help? Thanks.

OS ... namely windows picky on how it was installed, you move how it boots and it wont boot anymore... If it was installed onboard and then moved to a PCI card, it will most likely not work.

<-- knows from experience.

I've been booting from my cd-rom (windows xp cd) but not it goes to the screen where it's about to boot and doesn't. Which is why I'm finally asking. I don't want to reformat anything yet because I have about 100 gigs filled (mostly with stuff i want to keep). I checked the jumpers on the drive itself and they are correct to the best of my knowledge. I've even tried every combination (slave, master, dual) Tried hooking it up the the secondary and primary. Should I change the jumpers on the mobtherboard? I've tried every option in the menu (hitting f2) regarding boot order and etc and have never seen the option to boot from the pci ata 133 card. Is there a way to get the real bios on my dell (i consulted manual and no luck) so I can try changing settings there?

Well, I may have the reformat and partition the drive into 2 80s but I need to somehow bootup now to backup my data. =(

Pre Service Pack 1 Windows XP will not recognize a partition over 137GB. So you have to deleat and then create a new, smaller partition if you are going to try and boot from the Windows XP CD and install from there. You can then create another partition form Disk Management, or use something like Partition Magic to resize the smaller partition to fill the entire drive if you wanted one partition only. The only way you are going to get at your data is to put the drive into another machine and copy it off. The other machine will need Windows XP installed, unless the current partition is FAT32.

What i don't understand was I was bootinf from the cd fine and then all of a sudden it would lock up when it's saying "press any key to boot from cd....." The dots start and zero and they hit like 6 or so "cd....." and then it used to boot from the cd if no key was pressed and it counted to 5. Now it just hangs at 5 dots. If you press a key it goes to installing xp.
