My Old Core 2 Duo PC just died. Too many failings to write about.Simply stated, it just wont POST now.
It died at a very bad time (prior to AMD ryzen release) which is still an unknown.

The new Kabylake G4600/4620 CPU is looking good for what I intend to use the PC for.
i) Power browsing (50+tabs)
ii) Youtube videos
iii) Occasional encodes to use in multiple devices.
iv) Video watching.
v) Virtualization of Android to play the games I play on mobile.

I am also keen on achieving my goal with the least cost possible and overhaul the whole stuff in say 5 years. Should I bite the bullet, go for another CPU or wait for Ryzen?

If you were fine with a Core 2 duo, then just grab a used i5-2400 or similar PC with an SSD. I sold one for about 100 bucks AUD on Ebay the other day (minus the SSD), it would thrash what you had before and you can upgrade in a year or two or three if you feel like it since it cost almost nothing. You could even add a cheap video card do help with the encoding and decoding,

Out of all the Kaby Lake SKUs that might be affected by the Ryzen launch, the Pentiums will see little/no pressure, since they already have exceptional perf/$. If your current machine was acceptable for the occasional video encodes or you plan to use Quick Sync anyway, then it sounds like the Pentium was already your best choice to begin with. Instead of going with the 4620, I would go with the 4600 and invest the price delta into more ram or faster ram (look out for 2400/2666 low latency kits if possible - e.g. 2400 CL12).

Yeah. I was figuring out if it was worthwhile to hold on to Ryzen....The quicksync and integrated graphics is a plus for me (lower power consumption and noise). About i5 2400, is I do not want to buy used parts as I am a rather heavy user (24/7 PC running) and think new parts will serve me better.

Go with the G4560, its dirt cheap, light years ahead of the E6600 and more than enough CPU power for your needs. I predict AMD won't even bother to contest Intel here this year, so there's really no reason to wait.

If your sure it the cpu, and not motherboard related, why not just ebay a used C2D or C2Q for $10 and buy yourself time needed to get to the Ryzen release?

Tried swapping in a new PSU? Looked for bulging / discolored caps on the mobo? Not that I'm seriously suggesting reviving something that old, but if it was just the PSU that got old and died, a new PSU is usable with a new rig too, and it might just buy you enough time to wait for Ryzen.

CPU is 100% OK. Started having mobo issues with its ram slot (2 out of 4) no longer working. Then it would randomly start or not start and require a number of retries to work. 1 ram slot has gone bad (lol).
The last time it booted, I was getting artifacts on the screen making me suspect a possible GPU issue. (Changed some years back to a Radeoon HD6850.
The PSU was changed about 4 years ago to an Antec 620W PSU. I suspect it could be a PSU issue but I need to get it tested...

Only reusable parts are my monitor, mouse, storage, ssd and possibly PSU.

Exactly. Ryzen isn't really going to do much to the prices of the G4600.

Here is a VERY simplified pricing model. Suppose it costs Intel $30 per functioning G4600 processor to produce (I'm just estimating here as I don't know the yields). Suppose no one would pay more than $117 for a G4600 (since the 7100 sells for that amount, why would you pay more than a 7100 for a worse processor).

Thus in a pure monopoly, Intel should charge ($30 + $117) / 2 = $73.50. That is basically in line with Intel's recommended $75 price once the new-launch extra pricing wears away ( http://ark.intel.com/products/97453/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G4600-3M-Cache-3_60-GHz ).

But in a duopoly, if there isn't any product differentiation between Ryzen and the G4600, then the ultimate price should be (2 * $30 + $117) / 3 = $59.00. This assumes the Cournot Model of competition is valid, but there is no real reason not to assume that.

So at best, if Ryzen is a good competitor at the low end, the G4600 price will drop a measly $14.50. Why fuss over such a small price difference? At worst, if Ryzen and the G4600 can claim to be significantly different, then you just have two monopolies and Intel can keep charging about $73.50 in the long run (until something changes to drop the 7100 price or yields significantly improve to drop the cost per G4600).

Buy the G4600 and be happy.

If you were happy with a core 2 then you'll be even happier with a $150 used xeon workstation. The W3565 ones are currently the best deal in that price range.

The g4600 is a pretty darn optimal cpu for your purpose. Zen will not change that the slightest. You dont have the needs. G4600 is very efficient have okey encoding and is cheap. Use dual channel ram and you are flying.

Actually i would consider using a skl kbl notebook as machine if you have any portable needs.

If you had to pick a number for say, a budget, what number might that be?

For what you listed as your goals, just about any cheap Sky/Kaby Lake machine will offer all the performance you need - certainly more performance in just about everything video-related than the E6600.

Are you interested in laptops? Sky/Kaby Lake i3 Laptops can be had with Windows installed for under $300, but there are some SSD models with 1080p screens closer to $500, open box for closer to $400. Plus, mobility, watch videos anywhere/everywhere.

Sounds like motherboard problems, not CPU problems. New (old) CPU not going to work any better on borked mobo.

For about $150 you can get a refurbed Sandy/Ivy quad system from eBay and add an SSD. This will be screamingly faster than what you're using now. Or, as mentioned above, look into a laptop maybe if your budget is larger.

Dell i5-2400 with 4GB for $110
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optipl...-3-1GHz-4GB-NO-Hard-Drive-NO-OS-/172489351145

Intel 160GB SSD for $47
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-320-S...GB-s-SATA-SSD-Solid-State-Drive-/271542757811

Then you just download the Windows 10 installation to a USB stick, install and away you go.

I'm done investing on stop bit solutions on this slow molass. Unfortunately, I can't get a G4600 for under $110 online at t moment but can get a kabylake i3 7300 for $150. This one looks good too clocked at 4Ghz..

Budget is not huge really. Max of $500 for casing, mob, ram and CPU. If I can squeeze a ssd in, all good. Else, I'll reuse the one I got.
Really wanted the kabylake for the better graphics. I'll cut ram from 26GB tom8Gb. Won't really need 26 I suppose....

Its about needs and budget ;)
A used sb i5 2400 as above will be fine. Add a ssd and its crazy fast vs what you have now.
Buy mobile skl/kbl if thats what you need. Its a very flexible solution. In that sense its also safe.
And perhaps a cheap end zen 4 core 8 thread and a 4gb 460 can nearly fit in the budget. It will last the next 10 years with ease as its very powerfull vs the other solutions.
8gb ram is fine.

26GB of memory... what an odd number. Well, odd even.

Just pay shipping and I'll send you a E8400 that will tie you over until you upgrade.

Wow that is a kind offer.

I know this is off topic but I have to give props to this man.

Thanks guys. The G4600 was priced at $123 vs the i3 7100 $153. (shipping cost me $35, original price $88 and $118). I went with the i3 7100.

For $30 extra, I think I'll benefit more down the road with the extra 300MHz and AVX2. :)

Cheers! Now onto mobo/ram :D
