Old Compaq won't turn off

My family has an old Compaq Presario 5150 from 1998. It would be nice to be able to use Hibernation mode because it doesn't need to be left on all the time.

The problem is when you shut it down or it goes into hibernation it just stays on. It used to get stuck at "Windows is shutting down" but since I formatted the pc it now says "It is now safe to turn off your computer." The bios is very limited.

Is there anything I can do to make it power off by itself after that point? Is this a hardware issue or a Windows XP issue?

Go to device manager view hidden devices and enable any hidden devices [if any]. That is all i can think of that would cause that right off the top of my head.
 
Sounds like it might use an AT power supply and thats why you have to shut it off. If not, I'd be interested in learning about how to change it.

Did you look in the BIOS to see if there is a power management section?

If so, place it on custom setting and then I would disable any settings for hard drive, video, etc., etc.

An old early-ATX system I have did this by default (P2 266). Under Power Management in Control panel, enable Advanced Power Management (APM). It's on one of the tabs there.

If it's not, it's AT.
 
I tried the APM option but with that enabled the computer just restarts on shut-downs and freezes before turning off during hibernation. :/

yeah AT form factor computers dont have a "soft" power switch

they literally have a mechanical on/off if its off you break the circuit. not at all like the soft power switches on more modern computers that basically can be programmed like a software switch as to what they do
 
Hi, A computer that old is probably an AT and not and ATX. AT does not shut itself automatically. ATX has a double row 20 pin conector to the Mother board. AT has two single row 6 pin connectors end to end connected to the MB. Jim

I have a 7 year old Compaq Presario too (5240)... and it shuts off by itself 🙂
