Faith No More did a pretty good War Pigs, but it was a while back. Can't think of any offhand that haven't been mentioned, though I'm sure there're hundreds, if not thousands.

Built to Spill and Mercury Rev and a bunch of others have done versions of Neil Young's - Cortez the Killer. ( Dave Matthews band did one also, but it sucks horribly. The Built to Spill one is A+ stuff though)
Presidents of the USA redid Video Killed the Radio Star
Low did a great version of Little Drummer Boy
Bloodhound Gang redid Fire Water Burn, but I'm not sure who originally wrote it
Lots of stuff by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
Nirvana redid Bowie's Man Who Sold the World

OMFG, I forgot the best cover ever. TOOL covered Zepplin's "No Quarter". It's really long and drawn out, but it's one of the best rock songs I've ever heard.

by the way, judging by your original post, I'm not sure you're aware, but these sorts of songs are called "covers" and there are a countless number of them.

Metal groups do the best remakes, IMO. The heavier feel they give to them works wonderful.

Stuff Guns N Roses have done:
Live And Let Die (originally a Bond theme by Paul & Linda McCartney)
Knockin' on Heaven's Door (originally by Bob Dylan) (The version Avril did was an INSULT to the song  )
Sympathy for the Devil (originally by The Rolling Stones)

Stuff Metallica has done:
Whisky in the Jar (not sure who did it first. Rednex also did a good version)
Turn the Page (originally Bob Seger) (BEST remake of this song)

I Wanna Be Sedated by Offspring (Originally by The Ramones, this version speeds up the track and turns it into quite a good piece)

It's the End of the World as We Know it by Great Big See (if you thought the original REM version was fast during that huge block of lyrics, you ain't seen nothing yet)

Tweeter And The Monkey Man by The Headstones (originally by Travelling Wilburies, I think)

Shame and Scandal by Bowser and Blue (not sure who did it first, but it's funny as hell)

Unchained Melody (almost everyone and their brother has recorded a version of this)

No, no, GOD no!! The first time I heard that I literally cringed and turned around, glaring at the radio. That ranks right behind Madonna's desecration of Don McLean's American Pie for worst remake, evar.

Edit: Fixed the name (I always get those two mixed up)

Haha. :D
Sure, I love the original but I didn't think she did such a bad job at all.

Thin Lizzy was the original, AFAIK.

I think Thin Lizzy was the first to record it...but I'm pretty sure it was some folk song or irish drinking song before they recorded it..

Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal was covered by Alien Ant farm - good cover as well might i add

It's a song about the death of several of early rock's legends in a plane crash! It was supposed to be a tribute to them and a lament of their death. She took that and turned it into a pop song! She gave it mindless, "catchy" beats that had no business being there at all. Really, it was an affront on many levels.
