I saw a 97 Civic LX for $1750 today...was tempted...but it had 183k. It was in damn near perfect shape.

Cavalier?
I have a '00 2DR Cavalier with the 2.2L I4 and I'll just say that the gas mileage is NOT as good as you'd expect. I average about 22-25 city / 30 highway. Seems kind of low... but the car is fucking heavy... last I checked it's got a 3800lb curb weight.

If you don't mind a plastic panel econobox, used S-Series Saturns have good highway mileage with a slushbox and even better with a manual. With my 99 SL2 auto, running the AC I routinely get 36-38MPG highway and 28-29 city.

To all tools who say Cavalier - go and bang your head against the table.

Assuming you get the car for 2k, it gets 40 mpg, and gas stays roughly 2.25/gal you will need to drive it ~24,000 miles before you break even vs just buying gas for your jeep.(~$3350) Given the amount of driving you do that should be between 11 and 16 months.
