i had a ati rage pro 2xagp onboard. the computer detected it as a 2xagp card even though it was an onboard gfx chip.
now i installed a gf2 ti and it shows up as pci and displays a code 12 in the hardware properties. windows reports it as an unknow monitor on an unknown device.
my system is an
466mhz celeron mendicino
i440bx/zx mb
256mb pc66ram(should be pc 100 shouldnt it?)
3-2-2
dram idle timer 32(what does that mean?)
1 stick is rated at 3-2-2-5 pc100
1 stick is ratesd at 2-2-2-5 pc100
1x onboard rage pro turbo
1x agp slot geforce2 ti asus 64mb

that might sound silly but did you uninstall the drivers of the former card before installing the new one?(i have found myself often forgetting that)

yes. i even used driver cleaner. crap. so hard to type. damn you 16color mode 640x480!!!
im using win98.

edit: using 69.xx whatever is current one for win 98.

I would remove the new card, uninstall all drivers for both, disable the ATI onboard in the motherboard BIOS, then install the nVidia card and let windows try to detect it, once it asks you for the drivers hit cancel then just install the ones from nVidia's site.

didnt work. unistasled drivers. then used drivcr cleaner. then reinstalled 69.94 abd still a code 12.

That's like a guy asking for directions 😕.

But seriously, that is some of the best advice one can give in computers as manuals tell us much more than one realizes.

i dont have 1. my pc is a hp pc and all the mobo says is meb-vm and an asus chip on the bottom right. its some pos hp oem and no manual or luck at hp.com.

hm thats bad.i wouldnt be surprised if there wes a jumber setting so u can disable onboard video.have y tried opening the case and look at possible hints on the motherboard? i never owned a mobo with onboard video so my proposition is totally theoritical.

i switched around jumpers and rebotted for the last few hours and fuinally got it to boot normally this time. the card is finally reconized by windows and the class12 hardware conflict has dissapeared. dont know hom long it'll last though. tthis has happened twice before now and only lasted 1 boot, reverting to crap mode as soon as i rebooted. anyway, has anyone figured out why it's considered a pci card geforce 2 ti instead of a agp2x geforce pro? on the borad it says geforce 2 ppro and it's obviously plugged into the agp2x slot.

needless to say, this is the freaking last time i buy from a big company like hp. does anyone know of a good company that builds pcs and gives you all the manuals on the cheap?
