You haven't really said what you intend to do with your new build...same things as the old one?

Uhm...that really makes no sense whatsoever.

how does this make no sense? do you think he would benefit from a x2 4800 to surf the web? be realistic. if the op wants to know about the current technology, read the anandtech site, it has real world information.

A good general suggestion would be a socket 939 Athlon 64 processor and a socket 939 board to go with it. Nforce4 based chipsets are a good choice.

For a variety of budgets, this is a good option.

On the low end, a 3000+ ($150) and a basic board ($75) will get the job done.

If you want more features on the board and overclockability etc. Invest more in the board. You can get a good one for $100 to $125 that will perform very well and allow you to get a good overclock on the A64, even with the stock heatsink.

If you don't want to overclock and want to get something faster, then there is a whole range of A64 processors. The 3700+ San Diego core is very popular and is a nice performer.

It's all about your budget for the parts, but 939 A64 combos are pretty much the path most people are taking.

what is a "gike"?

ok here you go:

motherboard with a nvidia nforce4 chipset, it has socket 939(which is the cpu socket) from a decent manf like asus, abit, msi, biostar, epox, gigabyte

amd a64 3000Venice cpu (venice is the core, it is very cool and o/c very well)

1GB of pc3200 ram, like ocz value ram. 2x512MB, the a64s are not bandwidthed starved like the p4s so the timings that you pay a premium for don't mean more than 2-3% of a speed increase although you spend 100% more on the ram

hdd to match what you need in size, sata/pata doesn't really matter as the performance is nearly the same, if the sata hdd is the same price as the pata, get the sata

gpu - get the cheapest pci-e (pci express, basically taking over for the agp and pci slots, there are different speeds for pci-e, so that is how it takes over for the agp slot) or even a regular pci gpu since you aren't gaming

that is basically it

After reading his original post, I felt glad to help. However, his attitude towards the responses of other people discouraged me from doing so.

Sneaky1: just because someone gives you advice that you don't want to hear, try not to go and flame the about it...

*shrug*

Your attitude is unncessary and the initial responses were correct - don't be so lazy and do some background reading first rather than just posting in a forum demanding people take their good time to provide you with information to make up for your own laziness.

Moreover, your question that you demanded is somewhat pointless as there are so many nuances and complexities in the computer hardware industry - what do you think the reasons are that dozens of sites purely devoted to pc hardware exist?

Those sites with their reviews have all the information you could need. Reading up at those sites which doesn't take much to do and garner some sort of information before coming here.

A good place to start would be the system guide recommendations that nearly every site has which they rate according to budget. This site has it and so do others. Rather than link, I will ask you to search yourself.

My story: until 2 years ago I knew nothing about computers and only learnt because I was happy to take up the challenge and because I had worked out that it would be cheaper to build a decent computer myself than buy one - not because I was 'rich and spoilt'. I read up on hardware at sites like this and learnt myself and only joined these sites retroactively.

It's not hard - I know you can do it too.

In the meanwhile, please act with more decency - I can't imagine your wife would think much of purile name calling on forums just because people didn't answer your question immediately in the way you wanted.

People are giving up their time for free on these forums to help others - please act with according respect.

Guys, he's saying Geek to correct his spelling mistake earlier.

Bob said "what is a 'gike'?" so that's his answer to that.

EDIT: yeah, and sneaky1 is being a little rude, but I thought I'd give him some info anyway. I started kind of a rant post and then deleted it and decided to make a somewhat informative post :p

diasper has a point in that we give up our time and knowledge for free because we want to....we also learn stuff from other posts while browsing....

A little bit of personal research would go a long way to appeasing these gentlemen/ladies who seem to be Pi**ed off with you OP....

Only thing I'd upgrade is the video card. However if you don't play video games, your current setup is actually overkill.

Nowhere near top of the line....and not quite a budget machine (yet) but still very capable....

What you may be better doing is keeping your P4 3.2 for yourself and getting a budget rig for the wife.....depending on what she is doing!!

bummer... u said what I was thinking, except that if you were going to give that machine to your wife, I was thinking you could give it to me, cause I would probably get much better use out of that one. but, yea, build her (edit, or yourself) a budget machine.

p.s. it is required for someone to post this kinda response in a thread like this.

While i'm still confused over why you you want a new rig...if you are going to upgrade form what you have, look at the Athlon X2 line for your needs at a minimum....since I doubt anything else could provide a drastic difference preformance wise ;)

even an X2 chip will be a bit pushed to give him much extra noticable performance if he isn't a multitasker.....his P4 is probably HT enabled too which will narrow the gap slightly!!!

I'm on the one year upgrade plan, if you have the money and you enjoy computers as a hobby there is nothing wrong with that. I just upgraded to a whole new machine, the old one wasn't even 8 months....lol

If you have money in your pocket that is annoying you then by all means get your self a ratpor which is a western digital 10,000 RPM SATA harddrive, Link To Raptor
I mean this is something that will boost the loading time of everything I boot WinXp-Pro in 20 seconds I boot into BF2 very easily it makes everything easier, Video editing akes a nice boost and so does general media/picture editing, copying large files on you harddrive gets easier.

My Rig :
AMD 64 3000+ Venice @ 2250 MHZ ( 250 x 9)
