I have not built one in a year, I have read up on new tech but would like some input on CPUs and chipsets for a everyday machine.
There is no gaming on this box. Picture editing, dvd & cd burning, internet checking, watching DVD on monitor, interfacing with i-pod and minor over clocking

Thanks

1 year isnt enough to build a new comp. Wait another year save up even more cash and get top of the line products then.

Welcome to AT.

What do you have now that it isn't fast enough to do those tasks? Or is this not an upgrade, but an entirely different computer that's unrelated to your current one?

don't expect much more performance with today's stuff, that is a decent rig, even for today. what you doesn't even stress your current machine, wh o/c?

the only thing i would change would be the gpu if you gamed, but since you don't, don't worry about it.

for what you are doing, even a old 1GHz Athlon/P3 w/512MB ram machine would be fine.

Only thing bottlenecking that PC at all would be the videocard, and since you don't play games I really don't see how it needs to be upgraded. Your pc is fine, but if you wanna build you another knock yourself out :)

Uhm...that really makes no sense whatsoever.

What is an X2????

A type of processor that's expensive and overkill for what you're wanting to do.

Buts its real good so you might wanna buy one if you decide to upgrade.

If you want to spend almost $400 on a processor and are going to be doing a lot of multitasking (and I don't mean web browsing when you're burning a DVD), then it might be a good idea.

If you are just doing web browsing...a bit of video editing etc then something like the one in my sig would do the job quite nicely.....it even plays games pretty well(which doesn't matter in your case) you could get the 2gigs of RAM to improve performance in your editing...

Nowhere near top of the line....and not quite a budget machine (yet) but still very capable....

What you may be better doing is keeping your P4 3.2 for yourself and getting a budget rig for the wife.....depending on what she is doing!!

Was that little outburst aimed at me??? Don't throw the toys out of the pram....

If you want to know about newer chipsets and CPU's then your original post was maybe a little too generalised....try asking more specific questions and you will get more specific answers......Do you know how many different CPU/chipset combinations there are available!!!

fuzzynavel, The outburst was not aimed at you (please see last post after that one). Your post is the only post that came close to what I wanted to know thank you once again. Just genral info not combos.

Well, before you lash out at the rest of us then, did you do any research on your own to find out about this stuff? All of us are trying to help you make an informed decision and not waste money if you're not doing anything really intensive.

You gave us very little information to go on.

What's your budget? What is your wife planning on doing that needs a computer as good as your current one?

If you want to know more about the cpus and chipsets, read the articles on Anandtech. It will be much more information that any posts on here will provide.
