This is a real long shot but my memory is failing me and I'd like to know the name of this show. It was on tv in the early 80s (maybe earlier but that was when I was watching it); so its pre GIJoe/Transformers/Robotech for those who need some spacial relations. It was about a kid who had a flying ship (reminded me of a gyrocopter except the main rotary blade was under the plane). When a giant robot would attack the area, he would call for his robot that he would fly on top of and interface (his plane became a glass dome on the robot's head) with. There was a base where a scientist who would help him plus some other childhood friends had support roles. They always gave him radar info, etc from the base and when the robot had to fly, they would send out a giant rocket powered wing that would attach to the back of the robot.
Anybody have a clue? I've been watching some of the cartoons I used to watch as a kid. From my memory, it seemed to be a redubbed Japanese cartoon but I could be wrong.
