Old AMD SocketA mainboard problem - Asus A7V333

Hi all!

I've got a problem with some old Asus A7V333. The original CPU was fried (tried it in some other mainboards, no luck).
The Asus webby told me that my revision of mainboard (PCB 1.01) doesn't support 333MHz FSB (althoug hthe name is A7V333... sigh), so I looked for a pre-sempron, Palomino or Thoroughbred AMD CPU.

No luck there (I got a bid on EBAY, but not ging to pay +70? for a AMD1700!!).

Now I got a spare AMD 2800+, so I decided to try my luck with that. Installed it, booted - and the colours were all messed up, keyboard didn't respond.
Changed keyboard, and I got in bios.

Then I shut it down, attached case wires (led & power, ...), attached HDD, ... Rebooted -> no image.
Other AGP card -> no image.

So I thought the old BIOS didn't detect the settings for the new CPU, and though I may had to set it manyally with DIP switches (man, DIP switches? In '04? ...) - but I mailed Asus first.
The technician there (a Chinese dude named YC Zhang, but I have to call him ZYC... gesundheit) said he tested a 2800+ cpu on the A7V333 without setting DIP, but I guess he updated his BIOS first - or he may have used a A7V333-X.

My patience is decreasing with the hour now, and if it isn't going to work soon, I'm going to throw it on the floor and do a raindance on it.

Anyone got some in-depth knowledge of this issue?

What BIOS is in your MB now?
You might need to borrow a supported CPU from a friend just to flash your BIOS up to one that supports your XP2800.

I am thinking the same thing, that is the only way to do it.

I havn't got any friends with that old material - and this was my only one that's that old with a CPU installed.

Even tried about 12 shops, their stock is quite exhausted too, with launch of Sempron and all...

I got an old Leadtek Winfast nForce2 mainboard lying around, my XP2800+ should work in that - but was planning to use that a 3rd backup pc :s Way too good for the granny that's ging to use it!

I had an A7V333-RAID. The "333" meant that it could run DDR333 memory, initially. It was a bad motherboard and I was glad when it died at last, to make a long story short. Can I suggest a Shuttle AN35N Ultra, as long as the power supply you're using has an ATX12V plug for it. If the power supply doesn't have one, the Asus A7N8X-X is another option since it does not require the ATX12V plug.

Tnx for the suggestion, but I'm not going to make new expenses on this mainboard - or I should find some older one (hm, remember something - lots of socketA mainboards for cheap price in retailer - about 8 for $100 or something like that )

I'm gonna try e-bay for a 1500 or 1800 now, am just mailing a guy with a 1800, trying for $40. Hope I can pick it up at his place, so I can test it right away...

This forum looks quite ok, maybe a bit flaming (damn kids ), Jarred Walton advised me to come here (writer of gamer's buying guide). I've been on experts exchange for quite some time, mostly in hardware section (thats my main interest), and I build about 250 systems/year at work (and give tech support to 700 clients), so I hope to be some help here

To be honest, in my sector (and even my office) almost noone knows a thing about hardware - eg: just got a call from a lady asking for recovery cd's for a "Neovo system", had to explain the concept of Neovo flatscreen, brand computers and home-built (or office-built) IBM compatible custom pc's - and that she cant get a recovery cd - I think she's more lost now, too bad she doesn't live closer or I would have another client
Gives me quite some freedom though, so I can study up here.
