I replaced the alternator in my truck today. Bearings in the old one are shot and I think the regulator is starting to go. What gets me is there is only a $10 core charge for the replacement, not even worth making a trip just to drop it off :|

Is there a place that takes old alternators to rebuild or recycle them that would give me more than $10 for it? I actually have another old alternator lying around here someplace to get rid off too.
 
Reman it yourself and sell it on ebay. It's like $30 for a parts kit with front and rear bearings, new rectifier diodes, and a regulator with integrated brushes. Sell it on Ebay for $100.
 
If I am in a hurry I buy a rebuild, keep the core, rebuild the core and shelf it for the next failure.....but I have old cars so this makes sense in so many ways. If I have the time and the car is one of my hobby cars then I just buy the rebuild parts from the local rebuild shop and fix the one I have. Somewhere I have an entire box of 1960's Ford alternators.

Not a bad idea, except I don't know where I'd find rebuild parts. The auto parts stores don't carry them.

I know several places in town that are rebuilders/specialists/parts vendors all in one. You can get a rebuild from them, they will rebuild yours, or they will sell you the parts. The parts are usually at a wholesale price also as many repair shops come to them for items. I am sure if you search your local area you can find a similar place.

The starter in my Lexus went out but it was merely the contacts in the solenoid. The rebuilt starter was several hundred dollars....the parts to fix my problem were around $7.
