The News is mostly focusing on an Elementary school that was completely destroyed. They're trying to find kids...but the surrounding area is also devastated.

A large tornado is bearing down near Oklahoma City, part of a series of severe storms expected across portions of the Midwest.
Television footage shows a funnel cloud touching down southwest of the city on Monday, and radar indicates it is moving toward the state's capital city.

The Oklahoma House of Representatives canceled its afternoon sessions so Capitol employees and state lawmakers could take shelter. Sirens blared and workers made their way to the Capitol basement.

Oklahoma City's southeastern suburbs were hit by a storm Sunday and two people died. Monday's storm is in an area that is more densely populated.

Monday's storm is also near where a violent twister hit May 3, 1999. That storm carried the highest winds ever recorded on earth.

Coverage

Students were told to "hang on to the walls". The school only had 8-10 forewarning. 75 kids missing.

On a more serious note a storm chaser said they should have multiple sirens, one for possible tornado in the area and one for get your ass to shelter.

They only have one.

The NWS sent a tweet iirc that if you don't have a basement to GTFO of Moore, don't stay.

Seriously, you fucks, stop joking about this and stop using it as a cheap stupid basis to make fun of the President. This is a catastrophe and you should be ashamed of yourselves. If I were a mod I'd perma-ban anyone who joked about this.

I was living in Oklahoma City (stationed at Tinker AFB) for the catastrophic tornadoes on May 3, 1999. Unless you've seen the devastation these huge tornadoes can wreak you almost can't imagine it. My thoughts and prayers go out to my friends there and their families.

Reported death toll is up to 51, which is right around the entire death toll from the 1999 tornado, and rising. Ugh . . .

want to know what is sick: Dancing With The Stars was on while people in Oklahoma are searching through tornado school ruins for their missing children? Think something is wrong with our country?

It's terrible, nothing else to say to my fellow Oklahomans, god bless them, if you think it's a joke then you obviously don't understand the loss of loved ones and having your life uprooted.

I'm very sorry for the people in Oklahoma, but how does being in a different location enjoying an activity while someone far away suffers make you sick or messed up? Are all the people watching TV supposed to start praying or something? What would you have the people 1000 miles away do?

I'm not surprised to see morons making a joke out of a tragedy, its just too bad that its on anandtech.

So? Does the entire world have to stop just because a small region of the US had a natural disaster?

I feel for the folks affected by the tornadoes in Oklahoma and hope that they get the support they need to rebuild their lives, but I have my own life to live, and have no reason to interrupt my daily routine.

(Not that I actually watch Dancing with the Stars, mind you :awe:)

Ive given to red cross but was hoping someone local may know of another fund that will provide more immediate assistance?

No, the entire world doesn't have to stop... I just find sick that a major US broadcasting company thinks DWTS is more important than this disaster at this point in time.

It's a localized disaster. I'm sure the stations in the areas that are impacted have interrupted their normal programming.

Local news stations, but most of the money will be funneled to the Red Cross, or other national groups.
