The solution is to move the flas away from the lens, but that's not really possible with cameras with built in flash.

well, when other people's eyes in the photo aren't red...not much you can do there.

It doesn't matter what color your eyes are. Red eye is a reflection of the retina wall in the back of your eye. How much red eye you get with a standard camera/flash combo is determined by how open the iris is. This is why "red eye reduction" flashes blink before snapping the picture. They attempt to close the iris.
