One word: Disney.

Disney has been doing this on their DVD's. Thankfully most other publishers are not so rude to their customers.

DVD players are supposed to block fast-forward, skip and 'goto' commands when specified on the disc.

Normally these are reserved for the copyright messages, but I've noticed that several rentals have come with trailers presented in this way. Some play the trailers as soon as the disc is inserted and before you get to the menu. One (don't remember which) plays the trailers if you select 'play movie' from the menu (this way at least you can skip forward using the scene selection menu).

Thankfully, I soon discovered that my no-name DVD player has a secret menu where you disable features such as region checking, control button blocking and macrovision output.
