Last but not least, some kind of Videocard NEXT YEAR after the GeforceFX and Whatever ATI plans come out....I will get a Geforce4 or if I'm lucky a Radeon9500PRO w/hacked Bios Price::: < 100 [/b]

Total: 931.96

So...Waddya guys think? I spent a while typing tis up.

Notce:

I Already haev a keyboard/mouse. They are generic brand (the mouse isn't even optical..it says COMPAQ, but I have never owned one..haha) but I'm VERY happy using them

I have some Altec Lansings I'm happy with.
I have a Lexmark Z11 that does suck, but i'm cool.

I will be Running Windows 2000 along with Mandarke 9.0

The only tihngs i'm worried about is the modem...may someone bring solace to me?

EDIT: I changed the RAM. And that Diamond SUPRA has bad ratings 🙁

It's great ... but buy two 256 MB DDR instead of 1x 512Mb cuz the nForce 2 chip supports dual channel memory which actually improves performance a bit ...
And try to get a 1700+ Thoroughbred ... pretty cool
As for the modem ... you could also get the Diamond Supra Max v.92 which i think is hardware too and supports v.92!

really? I hear though that 1 512 is ALWAYS better....

I heard though the throughbred were not good Overclockers? (review on Anandtech?)

Or are they? I'm going with the 1600+ b/c of the AGOIA core which allows great overclocking (possibly AROIA!) and its cheap price

Exactly, get two 256 meg sticks. Also, for only a few dollars more you should be able to get a 1700+ or 1800+.
As for the modem, the one you picked is very nice.

Good luck 😀

1 512MB is generally better than 2 256MB, but in the case of nForce/2 two (or more) sticks of RAM is the ONLY way to get the DC DDR capability. I'm not too sure what effect two sticks of RAM has on the nForce2's ability to overclock. A 1700+ TBred should be able to hit 1.8GHz+ (some say 2GHz+, but I'm not sure).

Nforce boards are capable of running identical sticks of memory in 'dual channel' mode which theoretically gives you double the bandwidth and may reduce latency as well. But, you are correct, most of the time, one stick may be a little better (less compatability issues), just with the nforce and the some of the newer chipsets does it make a difference.

sn00p, I changed it to 2 256 megs

Now about the processor...Is an Palomino AGOIA better, or a Thouroughbred (not sure about the nomenclature)

because i'm trying to keep costs pretty low 🙂

I might in the end though switch out that hardware modem for a software

Looks like a pretty good arrangement. You might be able to get a little better deal on a harddrive if you are willing to look around a little bit. If you can afford it the Thouroughbred will probably give a little better performance and run cooler.

REally? Newegg has the best price from pricewatch.com (I just checked)

Now my question: Are thoroughbreds better oc'ers than palominos?

NOOOOOO!! Software modems are absolutely evil! I used one before I got DSL and it was a real pain. I had all sorts of problems with it. Plus you said that you're gonna run Mandrake, Linux and software modems don't go well together.

I'm using one right now *sigh*

True though i'll be dualbooting with Linux, but the one I was looking at actually has Linux Drivers for it (*gasp* Finally some official drivers *gasp* though i'll prolly check out sourceforge sine there is always someone who improves the companies drivers)

$66 AMD Athlon XP 1800+ Thoroughbred OEM @ newegg
- The new Thoroughbred uses a new .13mu manufacturing process vs .18 on the Palominos.
- Smaller core translates to a cooler running cpu & higher scaling potential
$104 EPOX EP-8RDA+ nFORCE2 1xAGP(8X)/6xPCI/3xDDR W/LAN, 1394, USB 2.0 & AUDIO @ mwave
- Everything you need for slightly lower price & winner of anandtech's nforce2 roundup in stock at mwave.
$105 2x 256MB PC2700 333MHZ @ mwave
- If you're not going to overclock ram stick with the basics

If you live near City of Industry in California. You can skip on shipping and instead pick your order at mwave for a $5 will call charge. Just phone in your order and pick it up an hour later. For your modem stick with the v.92 hardware modems and you'll be fine. You'll find the US robotics v.92 for $20 or $10 after rebates at PC Club. Best Data is also a good brand, find it on sale at Fry's. And please don't skimp on the monitor. Everything else looks good but I still don't like the case😛

Palmino's are better overclockers form what I've heard, but thye tbreds run a little cooler, supossedly it depends on what ur using to cool it mostly in my opinion. Use some artic silver 3 of course too..

Tbred will definitely o/c higher but wtih a cost of pushing the vcore by 0.2v which might kill the CPU in months to come like the Intel 1.6A. I would prefer a palomino over a tbred any day for now. 🙂

Okay, so the 1800+ is a better Overclocker than the 1600+?

Is the moniter bad? I though that was good.

Will check out the epox, but one of threa son i got the MSI was not only it had everything, but it was red (ie: case will look bad ass when you see through it!)

i had a choce for the same type of mobo with al the features but it was an ABItk but i forwent it b/c it was regular pcb...paid the xtra 7ish dor red

Oh I just wanted to say I've had numerous problems with mwave generic ram, as has everyone i know that has bought it from them... bestbuy has 256MB crucial ddr2100 sticks on sale for 40 each u'd be better off with those..

Thoroughbred CPU's have more room to overclock because of the design. Contrary to what someone said, all things being equal, a smaller core doesn't mean lower temps... it means higher temps because it has less surface area to dissipate heat through. The lower voltage is what makes T-Bred's run cooler... 1.5v vs. 1.750 volts that the Palomino used. I myself have an XP1700 T-Bred coming from newegg right now. I hope to get at least 1.67 Ghz (XP2000 speed) with 1.5v, but maybe that's not realistic? I dunno, I'll have to check some other threads here.
Thoroughbred is definately the way to go though... you should be looking for a heatsink that has a copper base, then you can put a low speed 80 mm fan on it and it will have more than adequate cooling.
I bought the Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 80 Gb drive from Circuit City for $140 on Friday cause my Maxtor drive grenaded... it's worth $140, so the price you found on it is definately worth it. However, if you can afford the 120 GB model, it will be slightly faster because it uses 60 GB platters as opposed to the WD800JB's 40 GB platters.
Also, Best Buy has been having sales where you can get 48x CDRW drives for $30 after rebates, so check that out before you order from newegg.

Okay, so the 1800+ is a better Overclocker than the 1600+? I'm confused. Palmoni, thourghbred A/B, agoga, agoia, aroia, stepping, bla balbaklbjaklsdjfasdfkjsd;fjas /me explodes

Okay here is what I know

There are many types of Palominos in different revisions that allow for better overclocking- they go from AgXXXa to ARoia
They Agoia and Aroia are the best steppers.

However the last palomino was producted at 1600+ and then AMD shifted to the thoroughbreds

from 1700+ to 2100+ we got Thoroughbred A. they were not very good ocer's

then from 22000+ ALL are REV B Throughs (which it seems allow for better ocing)

Is the moniter bad? I though that was good. I currently have a 15 inch CTX PL5 (value serives) Moniter and it won't go above 1024*768 60Hz....This gets all the way to 1280*XXX! How is that bad? I would use the current moniter I have, but the problem is that I'm giving this pc (sans all the info on my hdd...i'm going to back it all on using my 12X sony and give her a clean slate) to my mom b/c she does a shitload of CAD crap (and our 233mhz Pentium (not p2, the first) isn't working for her) and the pc she uses is too slow...and everything looks ugly as hell b/c the vid card is integrated and it can't do a lot of openGL functions. So figure a 550k6-2, 320 megs of ram (as opposed to the 32 that the hp has) , a a geforce2 should be able to do what she wants. Besides i've had this pc since2000 (1998 if you count the first mobo....that later blew up and made some nice fireworks, but thats another story)

Will check out the epox, but one of threa son i got the MSI was not only it had everything, but it was red (ie: case will look bad ass when you see through it!)....But if that NForce2 mobo is on red pcb or blue pcb I'll buy it (I never thought i'd care over the cosmetic design of my pc. My current one is an old modified 486 case....its funny b/c people see me play 3d games on it and they are amazed....then again I can't play any new game)

i had a choce for the same type of mobo with al the features but it was an ABItk but i forwent it b/c it was regular pcb...paid the xtra 7ish for the RED PCB

Actually, I live about an hour and a hlaf and I'll consider it (I need to bond a little more with my dad....we haevn't been on great terms for the past year and half)...but at newegg everything save for a few things are free sipping and i can wait

Btw, thanks VERY much b/c it seems you actually clicked on the links to find out info about the stuff (obviously with thecase)

Besdies, that case is awsome...how can you not like it! Hahaha...A balck case with white floppy, dvd, cdrw and REd PCB on the inside....haha

actually the reason i got it was good reviews, the PSU seemed fine, and the cost for 62 chipped! (which is a steal at any rate!)

I do want to OC but i'll stil get those sticks of ram since they are 30 dollars cheaper (Remember, I prolly won't push it to the absolute limits and spends hours upon hours ocing, but i'll try it a little)

Oh yeah, and one more thing. Do i need a ATA 100 Controller card to acheive ATA 100 speeds? I kind of have an idea of what the cards do...wait no I don't. And if i should then why are there so many pc buffs without them? Do most new mobos automatically have that function supported or something?

A hardware modem for 20 dollars! If only a PC club or Frys existed where I live! I live between Riverside (or LA if you don't know erhe riverside is) and San Diego - IE: Where there is nothing but houses, houses, houses, and more houses..the inland region to be specific. Are these deals also online or are they only instore? If they are online i'll gladly pay 10 bucks for shipping and get a hardware modem worth a damn for 30 bones.

==============================================

Read that, it is bascially an extension.

Is that a Liteon At Bestbuy under a different plan? so then i could flash the firmware and turn it into a 52x (like I need that 😛 my 12x sony is perfect)

I chcekd out the Epox, but its Green 😛

I looked @ the specs and they seem to be virtually identical save for the firewire...but then again i haven't used USB once in my life so I doubt i'd need firewire, ilink, ee1394, or whatever other variety of names it likes

and now i'm hesitant toward that ram....

looks ok. you might want to really consider getting a better power supply though. if looks are a big deal to you, newegg has an Antec 350W with blue LED fans inside. if you want to keep costs down i'd get a sparkle 300W.

Okay, thanks for the info I'll stop recommending it. And no I'm not an expert, I just read stuff from online and judge from there. And I should really stop recommending stuff I don't have experience with😛 And magomago makes me laugh at his exploding comment🙂 Because I don't know much about AMD overclocking. Go with whatever motherboard you like most. Both are good (I've read). I agree the red PCB will look better than the green inside the black case.

And taking a second look at the monitor- I didn't see "flat screen" in the description. The price threw me off, that's a good price! Sorry if I made you miss your- by tonight goal. I should just stop posting in GH in general. I just end up making everyone second guess their purchase plans😱 Sorry if I confused you any😉

no no no no... Palominos were made from XP1600 up to XP2100... The only sure way to get a T-Bred A is to order one that's advertised as a Thoroughbred core, or that it's manufacturer with a .13 micron process. Thoroughbred B CPU's for now, are only XP2400 and higher.
