Okay so I finally rented 2001: A Space Odessey

I'm thinking I need more drugs. But seriously that movie sucked, I don't get what the fuss is about.
 
i thought it was interesting

but still boring...just not entirely

however, i liked it more than "citizen kane". for that one i turned off the movie and did laundry
 
you HAVE to read the book first or the movie will be pointless. kubrick and clarke did that intentionally.

i saw the movie, felt like you. then i read the book, had an epiphany on life and then watched the movie again and was absolutely blown away.
 
umm, so why don't you explain it so we can see if YOU really got it?

Also, I have heard differnt things, so who knows. Last I heard it was about Nietzsche, but what kinda sounds pretty out there.

If I have time I might pick it up. I find the premise very interesting but just thought it was so boring. There are huge, long, drawn out scenes that just seem so superfluous. And the end was strange, I have to be honest I didn't understand it.

And lozina, I consider myself reasonably intelligent. In fact, I would consider anyone who uses movies to gauge intelligence to be stupid.
 
Anyone using 2001 as some sort of test for intelligence is likely just enjoying the elitist feeling of "getting" a movie that lots of people don't like.

I haven't read the book, but I did see the movie. I thought it was somewhat interesting, especially the parts in space with HAL9000. But on the whole I wouldn't put it anywhere near my top 10 of all time. I think a film should be able to stand on its own.
 
One of the best films ever. Its subtle brilliance is on a different magnitude than that of most films.

However, for ATOT to like it, it needs more 'splosions, boobies, and homoerotic Spartans.
 
Boring yes, intelligence has nothing to do with it, I didnt read the book either so thats natural... If you want to see a great movie that requires you to be very aware to understand it watch "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

and Vanilla Sky...those two movies are two of my favorites.

Yes, there were tons of hot, shirtless men, and yes, I liked looking at those guys, but I liked the movie for other reasons too. :|

[Edit] But back on topic, yes, 2001 - A Space Odyssey was a great movie

after you read the book and then watch the movie again, all those drawn out silences will be filled by your mind with information you got from the book.
 
I think this might be true with Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I went to see that movie and did not find it very funny at all. However a fellow I work with said the book is great and I should read it. So I read the book, and it had me cracking up. Very good read. I'll have to go and watch the movie again now that I've read the book and see if it's any better.

QFT . . . I didn't like 2001 at all. I appreciated it a little more after reading up on it, but I guess I just like flims that have stories. Doesn't make me an idiot; there's nothing wrong with using movies for entertainment. That's what most are made for.
 
I also didn't "get" a clockwork orange. After watching it, I read about what it was "supposed" to mean, and had even less appreciation for it. But on the other hand, you have to look at these films in the context of their time period. It's easy for us to not enjoy older movies, especially sci-fi ones, because they aren't as highly produced or as polished as today's movies that we're conditioned for. I guess you kinda have to get past that aspect of it. In a parallel sense, after watching stuff like Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan, I find that I can't enjoy classics like Dirty Dozen or Bridge Too Far in the way that I think they were meant to be enjoyed. I guess I'm spoiled.

Don't do that - the new movie is an abomination, they essentially took all the jokes out.

If you can handle the overpowering Englishness of it, and the shoestring budget, you might try the 1981 miniseries from the BBC. So funny.

As an entertainment movie, 2001 is pretty boring. If you just enjoy the soundtrack and visual effects, then it's pretty fun. I picked up the remastered 5.1 version a couple years ago and was surprised at how slow and boring it was. If your goal is to be entertained, it won't meet your needs. If your goal is to think about the movie and enjoy the A/V aspect, then it will be more fulfilling.
