Okay, I posted a message earlier that I couldn't get my father's HP Scanjet 6200c to work in Win98.

It originally ran great on his Win95 but when I upgraded him after a virus attack to Win98SE it wouldn't see the scanner.

I took the scanner to my apartment and tried to get it to run on my machine which is also running Win98SE still no luck.

I formatted my hard drive and installed Win95. This didn't list USB in device manager, so I ran a USB setup program that I found on the original HP Driver software disk. When I rebooted the machine with Win95 it saw the scanner and installed it without a problem.

Now what can I do? In device manager for Win95 it listed the USB as a "Standard Universal PCI to USB host adapter" it also had a listing for "USB Root Hub" This is the one that works.

In Win98SE it lists something like "Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal host adapter" This doesn't work.

How can I delete the USB software that's not working in Win98 and reload that "Standard Universal PCI to USB host adapter" ??

Thanks for any help

this is just a guess, so use at yor own risk....

in device manager, click on the listing and on properties, and somewhere there should be a button to update, click on that and it should find the older version, or you may need to point ot to it, if you have the driver, and then try and add it.

hope this helps. :)

Just called HP tech support, again. This guy said that he's aware that some USB items can have components damaged when they are hotswapped.

Basically, what he was saying was that the scanner might have had some intermal ROM damaged when the USB cord was plugged in while the pc was on. He said it's a known issue with USB devices.

He said the reason that Win95 detects the scanner is because Win95 isn't looking for the same information that Win98 does. And the damanged ROM in the scanner is never checked in Win95 but is in Win98 and why it won't work.

Anybody else heard of this? Or was he blowing bullsh@t??

Try uninstalling all the software and unplugging the scanner.
Then install the software first and then plug the scanner in.
Some USB devices will only work this way.
