Here's a comparo of the VF700 alcu/cu, AC5, and some passive cooler.

That comparison is a little suspect. They only show a few degrees increase over idle for the "load" test for most of the coolers reviewed. I've read several different NV and V700 reviews and most show about 20 degrees increase which I believe.

The reason might be that it is a 6800LE

EDIT: or maybe they didn't run it long enough. But i'm sure they tested each cooler under the same conditions and for the same amount of time.

Doesn't seem the debate is settled. Lets get some more input. I'm sort of what they call "anal" when it comes to some things. For example if I got the Zalman VGA cooler then I'd have to get the Zalman CPU cooler to match. I'm going thermalright so as of right now, I'm leaning towards the ATI Silencer for my 9800 PRO.

as far as i am concerned either is good.
i can't even hear my NV5 at all, so there is no noise issue. and of course it cools fine, so if the zalman does, that's probably comparable to the NV5 also...

You can't hear it, but others might since the other fans in their case might be quieter.

Even when I run my 120mm fans at 7v I still can't hear my Arctic Silencer, and my computer is pretty darn quiet. I admit that it is not whisper quiet like some here, but it is pretty close. I for one love my silencer but it should be noted I have only had it for a couple of months.

If the Silencer actually had a good conducting surface that was "PURE" copper and fit perfectly on the boards, then I'd buy it.
Is it not pure copper? And it does NOT fit perfectly, but with a lil tightening makes excellent contact on my GPU. What bothered me most about the HSF is the POOR finish on the copper (or copper hybrid as Tabb states). Now its the whining fan. I hate to bash this cooler as many people will love theirs for years, but the issues being talked about on forums and mine as well lead me to believe that AC's mass production of these coolers greatly decreased the quality control in their manufacturing process. Going with the new Zalman next. I'll find the perfect GPU air cooler yet. 🙂

If you look closely, you'll see the copper peices that cool the ram are mearly soddered on... and poorly..

Solder? It looks like they just glued them to me.

BTW, who wants to buy a Silencer? 😛

I wanted to buy an ATI Silencer Version 1 for my 9800PRO but thery're out of stock all over the place. Might be Zalman time!!!
