okay, let's be honest here... how useful is Cisco certification?

I have a choice of either taking a class on Cisco Part I (out of 4) OR a class on 3D CAD design with CATIA V9.

which class would be more useful?

ummm which field are you interested in? that is like saying which degree should i take, auto tech or art?

well, I am very interested in both. While the Cisco having a bit more committment required, the Catia class seems to be more difficult since I have no drafting experience.

Obviously, start at the beginning.
Obviously, have a specific end in mind.



Research it is what you want to do out of your choices. Research jobs etc, because you NEED to know what you are studying for

Cisco certs actually mean something as opposed to MS certs which are literally just peices of paper. A friend of mine is currently in the process of getting one or both. I'm sure you're like me and have met plenty of people w/ MS certs that know nothing.

those two classes are "extra class" for leisure, I don't 'need' them, I just 'want' them;
my major is EE or CS, and those two classes would only add to my advantage.

so, with that in mind, I would like to do both, but I want to know is the Cisco class as useful as its reputation.


NutBucket: yeah, lot of my friends in HK who didn't get into University just took the MSCE instead... I don't know how they are doing now, but certainly not good.

it used to be worth a lot...now you'll find a lot of unemployed "cisco professionals" who took the easy route by not attending a 4 year university when they should have. Its a small bonus for network engineer/systems engineer jobs.

I have my CCNA..its been pretty useless. But then I don't intend to make networking my career..I just got it to help me get summer jobs to pay for my University Tuition. Plus it was free for me to get my CCNA..so I jumped at the chance.

I got my CCNA in August of last year (so a little over a year has passed). It did get me a co-op position at Compaq (now HP) Canada doing network support for 4 major hospitals in downtown Toronto. Unforntuately it was a high-school co-op so I didn't get any pay. I'm hoping that this summer coming up I can get a job that will utilize the certification.
