Okay guyz, this one is a REAL butt kicker! I can't figure it out for ANY solutions for this problem. It comes up randomly with no rhyme or reason.

Here is the first link. It's a pic of the problem...couldn't screenshot it so I digital cam'ed it....so forgive the quality:

Picture #1

Then, when I have it REPORT the error, this comes up and hangs here:

Picture #2

I can CTRL + ALT + DEL and end task on it, but after that, it takes out 80% - 90% of all startup items on the start bar (where it shows the time and appz running).

In case you can't read the screenshots too well, here is the jist of the first error msg:

ERROR SIGNATURE:
App Name: explorer.exe
App Ver: 6.0.2800.1106
Mod Name: ntdll.dll
Mod Ver: 5.1.2600.1217
Offset: 00007ec4

Please help guyz, as this is happening on THREE machines I JUST formatted. No, I didnt' install SP2....refuse to, as it disables a LOT of programs, so won't do that. ALL parts on the machines are BRAND NEW and QUALITY.

Here are the specs on one system:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+.
DFI Lanparty Motherboard.
512MB PC3200 Crucial RAM (even tried Kingston PC2100).
160 Gig Maxtor HD partitioned into 70 gig and a 90 gig partitions.

I'll list one other system:

AMD Athlon XP 2800+
1 Gig PC3200 Crucial RAM (again, tried Kingston PC2100 too).
160 Gig Maxtor HD partitioned into 70 gig and 90 gig partitions (as well as an 80 Gig IBM with 1 partition of 80 gigs).

PLEASE HELP!

Also,

I installed ALL windows updates (except Service Pack 2). All security updates are downloaded and installed. I just don't understand, and I'm NOT unfamiliar with troubleshooting and such.....as well as building systems. I built both the systems listed....and I've NEVER had problems like this before. I've build MANY systems....with NO problems like this. Could it be in the Windows updates? I dunno. HELP!

the fact you have same prob on 3 systems prob means the very important ntdll file is corrupted from install cd - hope its a original Windowsxp (cough)

first try to replace it in one system - just rename old file as ntdll2 and install new one
Make sure the file is ONLY in system folder
I believe there was a buffer overflow vulnerability with this file

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?ntdll
http://www.auditmypc.com/process/ntdll.asp

www.nextgenss.com/papers/ms03-007-ntdll.pdf (but I dont think your prob is trojan on 3 diff PC (UNLESS you ghosted it )

I second this.

If three different system show this problem, all with varying specifications I would fault a bad install disk. Not installing SP2 will not cause these problems.

My searches on google tend to point towards the following possibilities

Creative sound cards being the problem.
DEP is also mentioned (include everything except explorer.exe)
Shell extensions.
Norton Antivirus 2003 as well.

Not too helpful though :/

Again, I'm sure you've tried googling this already, but you could try creating a new user account or doing a repair install of the OS.

Failing that,

The problem seems relatively isolated to SP1. You might just try SP2 for a week or so and see if it clears up, if not, you can just uninstall the upgrade.

But because it shows up on all three systems, I would assume your install disc is bad.

Not possible since I own (bought) TWO copies of Windows XP Pro (one with SP1a and one without) and I also bought Windows XP Home as well....which was actually the first one we bought....fer my Wifes computer.

I have found several links posing bigger problems:

CLICK HERE - Others With Same Problem - CLICK HERE

There are other posts simular to this....LOTS of forums going on about this that I could post. I just wish someone would find an answer. Please read the above linked forum page to understand.

Umm... such as what? Someone's been listening to the FUD machine, methinks.

Is 100% of your software non-warez, legit stuff?

Of course it is. lol. I would expect hacked softwares to misbehave.....plus, I don't go that route.

A lot of Norton products can and do cause a lot of problems.

I would suggest that you remove all unnessesary hardware and drivers. (Sound card etc) Uninstall Norton. Then run a chkdsk on the system.

If the problem goes away, start adding things back in.

It's done it on three systems, and two of them I didn't even have Nortons on yet. They are all brand new systems. I just don't understand.

What do the three systems have in common? Are they networked? You might have a worm that your elderly antivirus software's engine isn't capable of detecting. Worms spread themselves across networks without human intervention, so if one system caught one, it could spread to the other two.

Maybe a long shot, but hey. Try installing a 30-day free trial of Kaspersky Antivirus Personal 5.0. Set the on-access and on-demand scanners to Maximum detection, hit the Configure Updater and set it to use extended databases, and do a full system scan, see what happens. Also try the free Microsoft AntiSpyware beta from Microsoft's site.

I don't understand why you don't install SP-2 ???

I've installed it on numerous machines and never had a problem.

Also, have you checked your motherboards web site for drivers? Almost every chipset must have the correct drivers installed to work correctly.
